Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

Here is my problem...

I have a 1970 Suburban that needs help
I have a 1972 parts suburban for the glass and other misc suburban specific parts.

Where I am confused is the source for the other parts to make it go and give it 5 lugs.

Thats where the 1972 Blue chevy truck I currently have comes into play. It's Decent shape but nothing special, alot of rust and just that its an old farm truck I wont use. Runs and Drives with a 350/350. power steering and brakes.

So here is my question:

Would you part out the 1972 to provide engine, trans, radiator, wiring, and 5 lug parts for the 1970 Suburban, or sell and use the money for the parts?

But Hold on a minute, there is more.... You have access to each of the parts you need but they are of unknown condition. Must be rebuilt or reconditoned.:
1* 1976 350/350 combo
2* 5 lug rear (no brake parts),
3* 5 lug front suspension *would need to purchase at a cost of 150*
4* wiring from other parts trucks

It boils down to this, would you part out a decent running 1972 to build a decent runing 1970 Suburban? If you had the parts but each part required rebuild. I guess that depends on what the 72 is worth as a complete truck?

Would I come out better by parting it or selling it and the extra parts when I'm done?

Photos are of blue 72, gold 70 sub and Ochre 72.

Thanks

IMHO, Since the 72 is rusty and you know the condition of the parts you need, I would use it for parts to build the Burb and part out the rest.

The blue pickup is a nice looking driver. If you use the parts from it that you need, what kind of parts would still be left for sale. Are the eng/trans and suspension good enough to use without a rebuild ? These are probably worth the asking price of the pickup already. You will be surprised at all the little stuff you may need as well. If there are any other good parts left, you can part it here on the board. Theres nothing like a good parts truck !

I think between the three vehicles you have enough parts to make one decent driver suburban. I would keep all three, part two, and make the one. That is what I am doing with my 72 blazer project. I am using parts from a 72 parts suburban and a 70 parts truck to fix up the blazer. Then whatever parts you don't end up needing you can sale to re coop some of your projects expenses.

Re: Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

a burb will always be more valuable 'cause it is rarer. there are plenty of pickups going around. if the pickup isn't in mint shape anyway, i'd put every usable part into the 72 burb and use the rest of the parts when you go to fix up the 70 burb in the future when you have time, money and parts. funny that the 72 parts burb has drums on the front. someone must have made a switch or something, 'cause all 71 and newer trucks had disc on the front.....hmmmm......

Re: Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

There is no title on the 72 right Sub right now. I could get a bonded title wth the bill of sale that I have. Three years before the bond is removed though and Id hate to rebuild it to have someone come and claim it.

That means the 70 it she one to work on.

Yeah, we figured the running gear was swapped out before the current owner got it. he purchased for front clip items for his son's truck.

The 72 blue is still for sale and I'm leaning to just keep trying to sell it until I'm either ready to dig into the 70. Then make up my mind.

Seriously just trying to thin the heard and do it by either selling or consolidation.

Thanks,

Re: Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

67mach1, Hey just wanted to let you know something about Texas bonded titles. I did a TON of research on them when I got one for my 72' suburban. If someone comes along and "Claims" the suburban or money owed from that vehicle they wont actually get the suburban. They will either get the money they claim is owed from the bond company, or the value of what the vehicle was worth at the time the bond was issued. Both of which are paid by the bond company. All you have to do is pay the bond which is $100 if the vehicle is worth less than $4,000?.

Re: Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

I sold the Blue truck this weekend. Looks like I'm going to have to use my pile of parts to fix the burb now.

Sorry not parting either of them at this point.

Thanks for the help. Had the blue one not sold I was seriously considering using it for parts....

Thanks, but I only wish it was that simple.

I've spent the last five years spreading myself out way too thin. Out at the farm is about 20 "project/parts" cars and trucks that need to be reduced.

This sale and the sale of about three others need to take place in order to rebuild capitol and a little understanding from the wife.

But this one out of the driveway went a long long way to help out on both counts.

Well good to hear it.

Good luck on thinning out the bunch!

Hopefully you will get some time to work on the burb and do what you want to it, and when you do.... POST PICS!

Re: Opinions needed. Combine two to make one or Sell one use cash?

It sometimes takes culling the herd to improve the stock. I'm in the big middle of working at sorting out the pieces I have stashed for my collective projects and seeing if someone might just "have to have" the rest to help throw some cash at these projects. If I would quit buying tools and equipment that is. Last weekend a cutting torch setup (with full bottles) fell in my lap for a more than right price so that is now taking up a bit of garage space.

LOL! What a good problem to have.

I wish stuff fell in my lap that easy, for the right price.
Unfortunately that only happens in strip clubs... and its far from the right price.(not that I would know... I just heard that somewhere)

It sure is hard to pass up a deal. Mine was two weeks ago when I came across a Tow Master Tow Dolly for 250 bucks at an estate sale. 50 dollars worth of straps and I have a new method for getting my "treasures" home.

My heard got way too big. And diverse too.

at one time I had:
Mustangs Old and Fox bodies
Scouts
F100's
F150's
Thunderbirds
MG
and numerus C10's

My count was up to about 28 or so at one time. Now I am down to an almost manageable 20.

with the scouts, f100's, T-bird, and MG all gone.

For me it got so overwhelming I could not work on anything because I was always looking or parts or findng the next one to add to the collection. Now I think I have at least a plan to get down to about 15 or so by culling some of my parts trucks down to what I need off of them and selling or scrapping the rest, and a sale or two so someone else can get a new project.

Use that sweet tow dolly to get rid of the Horrible "F" word vehicles.

Nothing worse than seeing some nice gm sheet metal next to an "F"word car or truck.
