Wiper motor/washer assembly

Are the wiper motor/washer assemblies interchangable for all years, 73-87? My 73 unit is toast, and all the used ones I have seen have their own issues as well. I would like to buy a new one, and would prefer a later model one because they are slightly smaller than my 73 unit. Are they the same regardless if you have delay or non-delay wipers?

Anyone have any info on this?

If you can, post a pic of yours if possible and provide the year of the truck, I would like to see the differences between the years.

It seems like the delay module is built into the later wiper motors (84-up, when the wiper switch went to the column).

Sometime in the 80's they moved the washer pump to thr reservoir jar, I believe.

...but I don't think this is correct. My 87 has a separate delay module hanging under the steering column (...unless there is a corresponding part in the wiper motor itself).

I was thinking there was a delay board on the wiper motors after the switch went to the column. When there was a problem with "ghost wipers" the board (or motor) was changed. I could be wrong, though.

we had an '82 chevy nomad van a few summers ago (with delay), and i got reports from some of the guys that we worked with that occasionally when the van was off the wipers would give a little swipe.

i'm now kicking myself in the a$$ for not pulling the delay module and switch out when we trashed the van.

73-76 motors are the same, 77-78 mount the same on the firewall but will not work with older wiper cams or dash switches (without modification). No idea on anything newer than that.

78-83 is all the same, 77 and under is different but an differences within that I'm not sure of.

When I got my 77, it had a dead wiper motor. I had a brand new 78 pump, but I found out that while it would bolt up, the wiring and switch were different.

What I did was pull the switch and all the associated wiring out of the 78, then repinned the fuse block/firewall bulkhead with the newer wiring. I had to enlarge the hole that the wiper switch mounts in and drill new mounting holes (the newer switch is physically larger and has the mounting ears in different places), but that was easy you will never know since it's covered up by the dash bezel.

One side benefit of going to the newer pump and wiring is that I can run a intermittent switch and module. The 77 and under wiring did not allow for that.

I think the ultimate setup for 83 and under trucks would be an 84+ motor that does not have the intergrated washer pump. Run this with the 78-83 wiring, and retrofit a later model washer tank that has a separate electric washer pump in the tank. I can't say whether the wiring is totally compatible, but it would be something to look into. It would get rid of the funky integrated pump that always seems to malfunction.

Up to 77 the grounding was made into one of the "feet" that the bolts go through to mount the motor and you can tell the size of the motor itself is much larger than the newer ones. In 78 the motors got smaller and the wiring did change, Especially the ground wire was no longer made into the mounting holes. Just my 2cents...
