Scan tool
i have the 00 s 10 and im thinking of buying a code reader for this thing. I dont want or need a professional tool but i dont want the piece of junk they sell for $20 either... Can anyone recommend a tool for the job?
My CEL went on so i guess now is as good a time as any for one of these to add to the tool box

Re: Scan tool
Launch sells a nice little OBDII code reader for about $60. I use it for when a customer wants a quick check. I got mine from Matco but you may be able to find it online somewhere.

Re: Scan tool
launch also has the CRecorder. I like this little tool. if I have an intermittent I charge the customer a deposit, plug it into the ALDL and send them on their way. when they come back I download the 24 hours of data and review it. it has saved my butt a couple times so far.

Re: Scan tool
I've been interested in a scan tool for a while, but i took my truck to Autozone because they scan for free, anyway the print out they gave me had a few possible things to look for as problems. He said i'd have to get a diagnostics test to see the exact problem. So do they sell something that narrows it down more than what they use, because it seems like it might be cheaper just to take it to a shop instead of trying to get lucky on the first or second try. And I just may not know enough to make it worth buying one.
BTW, like $284 for diagnostics and 1 o2 sensor. Does this seem like a fair rate? |

Re: Scan tool
The diagnostics come with experience and testing ability. No scanner will tell you exactly which part to replace. The scanner is there to give you a general idea of where to start looking. Then comes component tests and the rest of the diagnostics.
