Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

The wife and I got back Thursday night after spending a few days in Pocono Pa celebrating our 20th wedding anniversary. After I unloaded the car my wife asked me if i was going out to the garage to tell the Heap that "Daddy" was home. LOL.

Replaced the bed strips with some stainless ones from Mar-K. Decided to sand and re-coat the bed wood while it was out. Got everything back together this afternoon.

I got one step closer to finally starting on my 2wd Jimmy project. I got the junk Caprice loaded on the trailer ready to go to the scrap yard.

Slid my new junkyard housing underneath and took a bunch of measurements and put them into a 4-link calculator. Then I began window-shopping on the internet for four link parts and sent a couple of vendors parts lists for quotes. Will hopefully order up new parts tomorrow or Tuesday.

i actually did something truck related for the first time in a long time.i bought a new(well to me anyway)truck-a 1978 Chevy Scottsdale 1/2 ton longbed.also looked at a couple vehicles for sale for the wifey.so its been a pretty productive week vehicle wise so maybe this is a sign that a new van is coming for the wife as well.

Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

Stripped all the smog stuff off the new (to me) 400 and put it on the stand. I was pretty happy that at least it turned over by hand. Ran out of time to due a compression test. In the process I was able to use the new crane I bought and even with the little puny caster wheels it came with I was still able to roll it around the garage pretty good. Never though I'd get excited about an original 70s era smog motor

Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

I yanked the 12-bolt w/3.42's out of my 74. It's been dying a slow death & man was it a mess. I'm going to autopsy it later this week or next weekend to see if there are any pinion bearings left....

I got the 'new' 12-bolt w/3.73's I acquired from board-member 'Jonboy' cleaned up, added fresh bearings + seals, & under the truck. Still need to set it back on the ground to finish tightening the leafs & shackles, add differential fluid, & double check all the hardware is tight. I finished up in the dark yesterday & it's been raining all day today.

I should also receive a couple of parts for my 64 project this week so this rear-end swap will be put to work immediately. I'll hopefully be tugging a rolling chassis worth of parts to get powder-coated soooooon.

Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

I went to Austin to help a friend out with a few of his projects. We gutted a pretty rough '84 4x4, and put a new master cylinder in his '74 Blazer. We also diagnosed a bad fuel sender (after pulling the tank) in the Blazer, and installed carpet in his '87 Monte Carlo SS project. That was yesterday, we cleaned the shop up this morning before I had to head home. It was great being able to hang out, and work on some cool stuff.

I also scored a few cool things fro my '79. I have a beautiful set of old school slotted mags, and a way better dash pad. I'm pretty stoked!

I polished the center caps on my wheels and also stripped and primed them all. I actually painted 1 to see what it would look like and I can't wait to get them all painted and installed. I even replaced the faded center sticker with an eagle globe and anchor sticker. Here are some pics:

Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

Got Yeller back from the painter last week, so I have ordered some new parts to put on, and started the interior reassembly.

Wife and I also purchased a new crib for the new visitors that are on the way...I assembled it in the living room, only to find out it didn't fit thru the bedroom door. SO, took it apart and reassembled it again in the room. Sucked, but now I can take it apart and reassemble it without directions...LoL.

Other than that, just did chores and relaxed as much as I could.

I still don't know. They are so nice, I would love to run them. As a backup, I brought my set of ralley's to work, and have a set of the factory aluminum wheels there too. I need to figure out what tires to go with. My slots are 15x8.5. If there is any way to get the slots to go with a 4/6 drop, I need to figure it out.

Edit: the wheels have a 3.75" backspace (I just chcked). Will this work with a 275/60 or so?

255-60's for sure in the front. I know rotation was a consideration so the 275-60's might be a bit tall for the front w/that back-spacing.

Do you think 255/60's on the front will be OK? I am not so much worried about rotation as I am having the wheels look funny being the same width with different sized tires. I agree with what you were saying, I honestly probably wouldn't rotate them anyway. I think 275/60 on the rear would be fine.

Re: What did you get done 3/7/10 springs coming edition

New starter and some 1/0 gauge stereo power cable fixed my no-start condition.

Thought I had a couple of dead Optima$ (common) but turned out the starter was dragging so hardcore it burnt the wire in two.

Also picked up some more front-end parts, hoping to get the drop going by early summer.

The 255-60 275-60 combos on 8.5" wheels would both work well. Ideally, you'd have a narrower width front tire on a 7"/F & the 275 on the 8.5"/R, but the sizes you have will work.
