My 88' Street/Strip Build

Hey everyone. NEw to the forum and I love the projects some of you have going! First off, I dont have any pictures right now, due to me being in Iraq and I have to wait for the guy working on the truck for me to go take some. So hopefully this week some time I will have a few pictures posted. As of right now this is how the truck sits:

88 Chevy step side sport edition.
383 ci motor
Steel crank
KB Hypereuectic (SP) flat top pistons
Not sure on the rods
Team G performance intake
Corvette heads, ported, polished 3 angle Valve job.
MSD 6AL ignintion box
Holley 750
March Performance serpentine system
Griffin Aluminum racing radiator
Optima Red top relocated to bed
Fast Spark Technology wideband tuner
125shot Nitrous express kit

I bough the motor already built, I have all the exact specs of it back home, that is why I can not remember everything off the top of my head. It made 420 WHP and 530WHP with a 125 shot, while it was in a 80's camaro.

A Turbo 400 trans with custom built converter is getting put in soon.
As well as a fuel cell. Already have holley red pump and fuel system ran.

Also will be putting in a new rear end with disc brakes. Do not know exactley what route we will go with it.Prob a ford 9". As well as doing an all autometer guage pannel and scrapping the stock guages.

MY latest idea has been to get rid of the nitrous and doing a twin turbo setup off of ebay.

I know I will have to mod the carb to a blow thru, get a bigger fuel pump, down pipe, and get the intake piping made. Any body have any input on one of these kits?

The guy doing all my work has years and years of experience and is a co worker of mine in the National Guard. He has built several full drag cars for people including his own Fox body mustang that runs 8's in the 1/4.

your build sounds remarkably close to mine, as well as i just came home from iraq, i was at rust amiha, 11 bravo hooah! but im active with 1ST ID. any ways check out my build link. the only difference is i have a little more going in terms of engine, 5speed, and full suspension. im the guy that posted the ebay turbo kit. and it would be a great entry level turbo kit. dont expect anything more from it then that. your heads will hurt you with that kit as well you would need to run different heads to accept the full potential of that kit. but good luck.

Well I have a set budget on what I am trying to spend on the truck. If money allows I will be doing a coil overs with ladder bars. I figured the turbo kit would be a basic intro kit.

The heads are fully built but they are not aluminum unfortounatley. The motor has a cam and completely built. It uses only name brand quality parts, just not top of the line like forged internals and such. I got a smoking deal on it.

Ill make sure to check ur build out, I might have some questions for you. Any one else have any input on that turbo kit?

What's your compression ratio? That has a lot to do with how much boost you can run. If it's to high, you'll have to change heads or pistons to get it down so you can run enough boost to get any real power. If that's the case, you might just be better off sticking with the bottle.

Well I talked to my guy back home today and he recommended against any kind of turbo setup right now. Compression on the motor is too high, also Im going to spend my money on making the truck being able to handle that kind of power. Good rear end, disc brakes, suspension. Again Ill have some pics soon.

GOOD CHOICE! .... alot of guys do things all wrong, me being one of those guys. i wish i would have done suspension first time around instead of later. good luck with the build!

and you can run high compression with any forced induction system but you have to build it to accept it as well. via horizontal releif holes in the pistons to bleed off the pressure so it dosnt break rings or keep them closed. just a thought to keep in mind.

Hey I been thinking of running these guages. It would save me some money over getting automete didgital guages. How accurate are these? I have heard of alot of peole runnning dakotah digital but anyone have any experience with them?

I'm not crazy about those gauges. They are hard to read any of them that change rapidly without some kind of bar graph.

Have you though about leaving the truck stock suspended and using Calvert racing Springs and bars? Caltracs are the bomb for Leaf rides.

caltracs are AMAZING! i got a buddy who runs them on his truck big block with a brake and the thing tears it up out of the whole.

Hey man i went to their website and seen the caltrac kits that they sell. So what do you recommend running those with some new shocks in the rear? Can u give me a comparison on something like this compared to a coilover setup? Thanks man, Im trying to learn about all this as I go. It sucks being in Iraq...

I remember seing this thread. I love that camaro, very bad ass. I guess my main question is. Is this a better option then swapping over to coilover suspension? I figure with the springs, caltracs and new shocks Im right at a grand. I could get QaQ1 coilovers for better price then that I believe. Seems like you know your stuff about these trucks. Im just trying to learn about all the different options. Thanks

Its gonna take more than coilovers to get it to hook. If you put coilovers on it yould still need either a 4 link or ladder bars. The cal trac route should be cheaper than either of the two other options and you could do it yourself in a weekend or less.

Where are you at in Iraq.? The caltracs would be a very good choice IMO.
