Re: how to rebuild an engine?
I'd look for the one by David Vizard. It's the "classic" and I've always found his info to be spot-on. It's on Amazon as well:
Amazon.com: How to Rebuild Your Small-Block Chevy...

Re: how to rebuild an engine?
Both great references.
The answers that aren't in the book are: 1. Have a realistic budget and stick to it. 2. Have realistic power targets that are within your budget. 3. Have a good local machine shop willing and able to work with a home rebuilder. 4. Ideally, have someone that's done it before available locally. There's a lot of "little stuff" that it really helps to have experienced eyes on. The SA book does the best job of highlighting that stuff IMHO...but you gotta be patient and work slowly and methodically to avoid missing critical steps. |

Re: how to rebuild an engine?
In my mind David Vizard wrote the book on SBC, however there are others out there. I built my first engine by using a Chilton's manual. However I won't use one now since there are much better sources now available.
Check out local community colleges for an engine building course. A good instructor will expose you to the "whys" of engine building vs. just the "hows". Keep track of your progress by posting an engine build thread. Last edited by dan76; 03-16-2010 at 04:20 PM. Reason: clarity |

Re: how to rebuild an engine?
I have one of those SA Small Block Chevy rebuild books. I live in Oak Harbor, WA as does the OP. Send me a PM, and I'll let you borrow it if you want.

The SA book I have also has a pretty good "how-to" DVD with it. Somewhere around here...

It is that one... with a different cover. It's about 4 years old.

Re: how to rebuild an engine?
I am off the island right now... won't be back until Friday night. How about Buger King parking lot around 1pm on Saturday. I'll be driving my green '72 GMC.
I found the DVD that goes with it too... Gary
