Transmission choice
I 'm trying to decide whether to rebuild my original tranny or bite the bullet and pay for a 700R. Originaly I was going to opt for the 700R but after pricing a few verses the cost of rebuilding the one I got it's becoming a tough decision. First of all money IS a concern but the biggest concern is which drivetrain will I be happy with for the price. I'm looking to drop in a crate 350 and change the rearend to a 3:42. I know the 700R has the overdrive but other than fuel ecnomy which setup would give me the most bang for the buck. My build thread is:

Whoops, I guess I should have mentioned the transmission that came out of the truck is a TH400.

Re: Transmission choice
this is a simple break down for someone that doesnt know that much
th400- STRONG. cheaper and more reliable.. 700r4- WEAK unless built strong. not cheap and still wont be as strong as a 400... on the other hand you have overdrive and a lower 1st gear.... it all depends what your truck is used as... DO you drive it like a grandpa or are you turning 44's or running 12 second 1/4 miles... |

Gas is going to hit $3 so, OD!!
I love my 700R4. Built like a rock. I can beat on it all day and not sweat. Burnouts in first gear are fun too. |

Re: Transmission choice
Well I was originaly going to build the 400, no questions asked, then I had people telling me to go with the 700. Thanks for the feedback, that was the answer I was looking for and it definately won't be driven like grandpa

Re: Transmission choice
Do you have a early or late model 700R4 and how long have you been running it ?

Re: Transmission choice
Mine is between level 3 and 4.
http://www.transmissioncenter.net/700MegaRaptor.htm Mine is a 85 Camaro core. It was rebuilt with all the parts listed. 2500 stall converter. 6" tail. Going on two years. Visit my Youtube page to see how I drive it. Visit www.bulkpart.com for parts. Use a torque drive kit, good clutches, 13 vane pump, boost valve, super servo to hold first really good, hardened splines, external oil cooler, shift kit and 5 roller planetary gears.
