Clear Distributor Caps?

I have always thought they were cool.

They are supposed to be better then a non-clear one. I cant remember what they claim is better. I just think they look cool. Plus Summit now sells an HEI cap w/ in-cap coil (Mr Gasket $33)

Whats your opinions on them?

Well on their site (Summit Racing) they do not have a picture of the HEI cap, but they do in their newer catalog. They have a mistake on their web site. Mr Gasket p/n 1263. but on the SummitRacing Site they have this under that part number: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=33605

Anyway if you go to www.mrgasket.com you can see a picture of it, its a very very poor quality picture for some reason.

Here is what they claim is better:
"With twice the dielectric strength of stock caps (no more shorting or arcing), these caps will not “carbon track.” Looks cool and makes ignition fine-tuning a breeze."

Here is a link to Jegs, still no picture of the HEI unit though.
http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerc...47&prmenbr=361

I am most likely gonna order one with my next order.

So, why is Mr. Gasket bad? Should we know about something? or is it a personal preference? Just wonderin'.....

Over the years i've seen T-bucket's and other open engine roadsters with them and it look's wild as hell at night!

But i have never asked any of the owners if they performed better than a stock one cuz i wasn't aware of that claim.

I never considered one cuz no one will ever see it including me when it's running that is.

1FaastC10----> Mr Gasket is like any other Mfg. out there they have some good products and some bad one's you just have to be an informed consumer so you dont get burned

ever notice how Mr Gasket stuff is cheaper than most others? there's a reason for that. the only thing i trust Mr Gasket on, is GASKETS. almost every other Mr Gasket product i have seen is of questionable quality. like Mike says, you get waht you pay for.

Yeah, like Jeremy says, Mr. Gasket does sell cheap stuff. Only thing I have on my truck by them is a thermostat, valve cover gaskets, and the cheapo chrome alternator bracket. Their gaskets are pretty decent, the thermostat used to be made by Robert Shaw and was bought out by them. The alternator bracket, well, you know. I'm not wild about the quality of their stuff. Personally, I would be real leary of a distributor cap from them.

Well I got the clear cap in. Its seems to be of good quality, but its not even installed yet That will of course be the real test. Here is a couple pictures for those of you who wanted to see exactly what it looks like (not installed ). It seems to be just like a regular cap except clear, no changes that I can notice.

Cant wait to put it in with the new msd module and coil

Looks cool but it's strange at the same time to see it clear since I"m so used to a red or black top.

wHAT A GREAT IDEA now I can see if the rotor is at the spot on the cap when i remove the dist.. what happens when you point the timming light at the dist. can you see the rotor on the #1 wire !!!!
I had one of these on my sandrail back in the late 80's and it was for s%^$ I hope they made some changes in the plastic, time will tell. Overall I think it is a good idea, I like it.

Solid:
Was it an HEI cap like this, or even a Mr Gasket Cap for that matter?

OK guys I got it installed with the msd ignition module and coil. Everything runs great and lost some tread testing them out. No complaints about performance. But I am unhappy with the amount of spark that can be seen through the cap. Its such a small spark its almost un-noticable. I took a few pictures at night and you cant really tell whats going on. I was hoping the spark would be about as bright as a lighter when you flick it. But its a small spark about the size of a BB, from a BB gun. Ill try to have some pictures up soon of the clear cap installed.

I would just guess that if your are seeing a lot of spark you would have a bad rotor also in time you should start to see more and more spark as it gets more rotations on it keep a eye on it and tell us more !!
