New Member Saying Hello - 1969 K5

My name's Mike Savage, been a long time lurker around this board, but just recently picked up a 69 K5 to build. I'm not new to the old iron (currently have a 69 Chevelle as well), but I am new to K5s. Here's some pics of what I have to start with:

I am wanting to swap out the drums for discs as this thing is borderline dangerous to stop. Is this axle closed or open knuckle? I am getting told this is an open knuckle D44, but the code on the axle says 44 5F(looking at the passenger side).

The bed is mostly rust free, some cancer in the usual spots, but the top is solid (It is crack free, but it is only secured to the windshield frame right because the bolts that tie in through the bed but don't make up to anything in the top ) It has a 350 in it, TH350, and the regular NP205 Tcase. Goal is to use it like a truck and have some fun.

Nice to meet you guys! I would encourage everybody to take a look at the rest of the pics to tell me if I got a solid truck or not: http://rides.webshots.com/album/576977586kmxoSB

Nice K5, it's an open knuckle 44. Swapping it out is a very good idea!

Looks like a good project. From the pics i see, it looks like a 70 model. The grill looks to have the bars in it and the front end is open with drum brakes which was a one year only deal. Welcome...

It is a '69. Same VIN code start as mine with the BKE and the top interior is painted the body color. Welcome to the board!

Blazers were all open knuckle 44s. Take my advice when I say that if you are going to convert to disc brakes just get a complete donor axle from a later model GM (73-91) and replace the entire thing. Trying to keep your housing will be a waste of time and money. 71-72 had discs but the shafts and joints are weaker and the brake hardware is specific to those two years; just skip them.
