Has anyone used a remanufactured engine from ATK? I hear good and bad, anyone here have any first hand experience. The local Napa and Advance are vendors of these.

Now im not a professional but i was talking to my dad about remaned engine(s) blocks and it would be better to just go get a block of craigslist like a 350 that hasnt been bored the hell out of and go from there just take it to the machine shop and get it checked out for leaks etc. and who nows a remaned engine may work great this is just my 2 cents.

I bought mine from Advance or Autozone in like 2003. Can't remember which, they're both a blur to me. They even use almost the same friggin store colors. I think after it was all said and done after I returned my core ($150 fee I got back) I think I only paid $800-850.

The motor has about 27,000 miles on it. It still runs well, but a couple years ago it developed a funky vibration at around 1800rpm. I tried new balancers, removing the fan , unhooking the torque converter (trying to isolate whatever the heck it is), new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, cleaned the carb, even a new distributor, all with no luck. It does it in Park, N, and all gears, all at the same RPM. I still drive it to NC a couple times a year, going to "the goofs" meeting 3 hours away and I drove it to TN last year which was over 4 hours away.

For around $1,500 you can buy a brand new GM crate engine. I wish that's what I would have done back in 03 (they were only about $1,300 back then.)

i got one once from advanced auto// 2 different heads one head had all new valves and hardware the other had all used valves and hardware// i did run good for a long time in a daily beater with no issues but wouldnt buy another reman again with the cheap crate prices

I struggled with this decision recently too. I ended up going with a local machine shop. I asked them a lot of questions and got a good feeling about the answers. I like that I could stop in from time-to-time and look at the progress. I also like the fact that if I have a problem I can drive down the street and talk to someone face-to-face.

That said - some people here said they had good luck with Jasper.

So, I would either go crate or local. $.02
