4spd Advice?
Recently picked up a 68 gmc 350/4spd 2wd lwb straight out of the barn, numbers matching all original.. spent about 30 mins got it running.. but not streetable yet..
Anyways, question.. it has a stocker Muncie SM465 .. and my question is to those who run them.. worth keeping it? I pulled mine yesterday to get at the tunnel for some cleaning up and the tranny is leaking from every where possible.. worth the rebuild? Or should I be looking at going with another tranny format? np435 or heading auto 700r4? t400 etc... Thanks in advance

It's up to your personal preference. Last SM465 I rebuilt ran me about 75 dollars for the parts. One thing is for sure, you're not going to ever tear the 4 speed up unless you really try to do it. GM never used a stronger manual trans in a light truck.
You just have to ask yourself whether you will be happy with a clunky truck transmission or whether you want an auto or auto with overdrive.

Thanks for the reply, yeah im thinking at the cost of what it will be to rebuild, why not.. plus I think if I went auto id miss the sloppy old beast... plus within posts I decided to check the rear end out, looks like someone along the lines replaced the rear end... ive figured 4.11 gearing .. guess I won't be seeing any hwy's anytime soon..

I have a SM 465 in my '67, and it's pretty cool - I like driving around with it. I would keep it if I were you.

The 465 is a good trans. They built them forever. Much better trans than my 420 in my '67 k20. Way cooler than an auto!!

It is a tough trans. but are hard to o-haul. If it's just leaking it is easy to put seals in.
