My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

Just picked up a 1972 3/4ton C20 3-14-2010

I just joined this site if anyone has info/ tips/ tricks/ parts/ sources/ that would be gladly appreciated

Check it out As purchased:

It Originally had a 400 but i bought it with no motor or transmission. However it had a 305 sitting in the bed out of a K5. Im going to go with that for now and this 700r4 i have in the garage but i would be interested in returning a 400 where it belongs

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

**** BTW picked up this truck 3/14/10 and my deadline is 2 weeks before memorial day may 15 cause im goin to vegas for a week and the truck must be ready to go to galveston beach memorial day weekend
All work is being done in house by just myself and brother after work from like 6pm till 1am.
Hand tools only, no lift, not even an air compressor, just wrenches ratchets and screwdrivers*****

So far all i have done is repair both door handles so they operate and wash the surface mold off the upholstery. Took off the intake and valves off to have a look, going to pull the heads tonight, and possibly begin a shopping list.

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

Ok so No on the 305. I didnt want to put a 305 in it but since it was already there i was going to for now to make it driveable. I Pulled one head off and my brother took a look and says it needs to be sent to machine shop to be cleaned up, and to forget the 305 and search craigslist for a 454. because the 400 (or apparently 402) is hard to come by. Now here I am gotta look for a 400/402/454 and a turbo 400 transmission something running that i can drop in and drive away same day. Its gonna be a budget built tow rig and weekend driver.

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

3-20-2010 Motor/Trans Purchased 500 Dollars

A Chevy 355 (3970010 block with a .030 overbore using a stock 350 crank). It has an Edelbrock Performer intake, a brand new starter, a newly rebuilt distributor, and a new water pump. It also has an xtreme energy cam, a set of 882 heads, and some Hypereutectic pistons.
It's a stock th400 for it has about 20k miles on it, comes with the torque converter, the electric kick down components, and the front section of a driveshaft with the proper yoke.

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

Turns Out the radiator stand wasnt high enough and the motor hit 270 because the water wasnt flowing, Threw an 37" tire under it and a 15" on top of that Plus 2 4x4 boards to bring the radiator up

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

Your truck still has the rare 72 only big block mounts on the frame. I'd sell them for some real coin and buy the correct small block mounts.

Re: My Build Thread to Document and watch progress 72 C20

The first set of pictures definitely show 72 only BB frame mounts in the underhood picture. The complete set is worth a couple of hundred dollars. The correct small block mounts are worth about 30 bucks or so.

The cups you have bolted to the engine are completely unlike what 72 small block trucks used. 67-72 small blocks used the rubber mount bolted directly to the engine block with one bolt per side holding it to the frame stand.
