PROBLEM need advice on oil leak

on my intake manifold I have oil sitting in the gallery were the bolts fasten it to the head the back of the intake seems to be caked with oil.

I have wiped the oil out of the galleries before and it seems to come back after i drive for a while.

It seems to me that I need to change out the intake gaskets
I also get an oil leak on the ground it does'nt seem to be coming from the rear main because It looked good when I had the tranny rebuilt I think it is coming out the back of the intake.

any suggestions

the leak out the back was the d side valvecover gasket I just replaced I didn't tighten it down good enough

But the oil on top of the intake by the bolts if from something else must be the intake gasket on that side.

A leaky valve cover can get oil on top of the intake, but I have also seen oil seep up the threads of the intake bolts( i goop them good with RTV). You might take a mirror & a flash lite & look at the back of the intake(intake to block seal)......I have seen them leak enough there to dripp out the bottom of the bell ( you get that oh chit feeling.....not the main seal!). on the ends of the intake, I toss the rubber seals, & run a bead of high temp RTV. You might also check valve covers as mentioned on the leak on the ground deal......also the oil press sender is in the back & they tend to make a mess when they leak. good luck...crazyL

the center bolts on most all sml.blks. leak onto the intake manifold .whats happenin' is the oil is backing up the threads.doesn't usually hapen to the outer bolts in either the front or the rear as often.don't use a rtv sealant as the excess may and usually does, fall down into the lifter valley and will get into the oil system and plug up the areas that will need it the most.....ie, the main bearings etc........use a thread sealant like bowman's or perma-tex thread sealant.

Oil seeping up bolts?

Slap some lock-tight on 'em. That way you'll make it harder next time you want to pull the intake off. Maybe that's just my method of mechanicing. hehe

I have used RTV for yrs on the intake bolts, & the ends.....i have never seen a problem with it getting into the engine. I use the red high temp stuff, & clean the bolt & the hole good....then fill the hole(you will notice that the hole in the intake is larger than the threaded hole in the head by a good amount). When you thread the bolt in, the threads thend to "clean" the bolt of sealer, & most of it will stay in the hole in the intake. what little bit that may get in the into the eng ......wont cause any trouble. In all the things I have tryed, this method has worked best for me. CrazyL

I had the EXACT same problem you're having, and it turned out to be oil seeping up around the intake bolt threads. Turns out two of the intake bolts were barely finger tight when I went to pull them.

I pulled the entire intake, and used a set of intake bolts from Summit Racing with the 7/16 heads, gaskets from NAPA, and some of the Silicone Sealant I use on my differential housing (Sillicone II Window and Door sealant: black in the blue and gold tube at Home Depot). Worked like a charm. Takes the heat well, and doesn't leak at all.

I finished up by pulling the oil pan and replacing it with a new chrome one and a Fel-pro 1 piece (check the Reviews board). Exactly ZERO leaks now.

I use that white PTFE thread sealer from GM on my intake and head bolts. Works good for me.
