Smog Pump Removal

Hello Everyone! I am removing the smog pump from my 5.7l. It is not hooked up and not required in my state of residence. Can anyone tell me what to do about the openings in the exhaust manifolds and the sensor to the smog pump? I thought about replacing the manifolds with ones that do not have the smog access. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What year is the truck?

You have 3 options on the exhaust
1 go to home depot and buy plugs to cap off the ports.
2 buy a set of headers.
3 buy a stock set of non air injection manifolds.
Id go with #2.........Actually i did! lol

Im trying to think of what sensor your talkin about i dont remember there being one.

I believe he has the same smog i do, it is not "AIR INJECTION" instead is it "RECLAIM".

the tube off the headers/manifolds is introduced into the air pump, egr, carb.
this is what i did:

Re: Smog Pump Removal

Sorry it took me so long to reply. Been working ot and falling behind on my honey do list. My truck is a 87 silverado r10 lwb 5.7l tbi. I have recently come across another 5.7l tbi from a 92 chevy 4x4. The manifolds on this one doesn't have the smog ports on them. Think I will swap them out. Here are some pics of the ones with the smog.

Re: Smog Pump Removal

As far as the smog tubes go, cut the metal tube off from the nut that threads into the manifold. Remove said nut from manifold and weld the tube hole shut. Re-install the now closed threaded nut.

Re: Smog Pump Removal

You could even weld the nuts shut while still attached to the manifolds in the vehicle if you felt like it. Would make the job a little harder but is possible. Than remove any associated components that the tubes are attached to.

Are you kidding me? That is a lot of effort when you can go buy 8 (3/8", I think) NPT threaded plugs and screw them in. I pulled my maniolds, unscrewed the smog tubes, knocked the insert tubes out of the holes, chased the threads with a 3/8" NPT bottom tap, put some anti-sieze on my allen-head plugs, installed, and reinstalled the manifolds. Looks like attached pic but stainless steel. You don't have to remove the manifolds, I did because I hate standing on my head working on things.

Re: Smog Pump Removal

Thanks for the info. The plug idea sounds less time consuming. I'll let you guys know how it goes.

Re: Smog Pump Removal

............and find a suitable sized box to keep and store all the smog stuff you remove. Needing all that $%#! to meet "new" smog regulations one day will make that box a welcome sight. LOL.

I didn't have to remove the manifolds to weld the nut shut. Took me all of 10 minutes in my garage to complete the job. I was just too lazy to go to the hardware store to find a plug. Either way will work. Plus his truck only has 1 smog tube coming off each manifold like mine did. SO you only need to perform this twice.

More power to you if you got it welded up that fast. It would have taken me 15 minutes to get the welder and everything out to to do it that way. At the time the shop was not yet organized very well, we had just moved.

EDIT: Oh wow, that one does only have one tube on it. When did GM go to that style? Mine had 4 smaller ones and some were very testy to unscrew.

I know my early 90's truck had 8 A.I.R. tubes going into the exhaust manifold which was just easer to remove and plug as long as you could get the tubes out of the manifold. At that point swapping in a set of non emissions headers was my next step for simplifying the removal of emissions components. I was very pleased to see my 86 305 only had the 2 A.I.R tubes! Great info in the thread though!! Thanks 83GMCK2500 for your feedback as I am sure it will help others in the future as well.

Re: Smog Pump Removal

The plug idea worked great. I had the existing bolts tapped and purchased the plugs for $1.50. Thanks for the great idea. This will hold me until I can purchase some headers and new exhaust system. Here are some pics of the plugs.
