Went better than expected

71 LWB with LQ4/4l80 swap.
3.73, DT Swap headers in true duals and 22" Magnaflows, and Speed Density Tune by Herron Performance (me).

I was really hoping to see 9.2s (1/8th mile) but on the first pass we saw a 8.9x pop up, I was SHOCKED!!
made 3 passes and they were all 2.0 60's with 8.9x @ 80

There is more in it, it short shifted 1-2 at 54xx, I have bumped that up and fixed the timing issue.

Not sure when I will get to go back but it was a blast!!

Re: Went better than expected

That's pretty sweet with a 22. Buy you a cheap set of light weight 15's and drag radials and I bet it would drop more.

Sent you a PM asking about the size of the wheels on a full weight truck, ie the fronts.

And after looking quickly, not many options for the 5x5 pattern, but options open way up for a 5x4.xx, thinking I might figure out what width i can run on the front and then get an adaptor for the lug pattern, this would also let me space them out the way I want them, rather than changing the lug pattern.

BTW-I am confused about "with a 22"-what is that referencing? the only 22 i see on the truck is the mufflers, LOL

I didn't read the post right I was thinking you had a 22 inch wheel. Centerline makes a fair amount of stuff in 5 on 5. You can also buy rotors for the front in 5 on 4.75 from performance online. I didn't get the Pm but I would run a skinny and street tire on the front if it was gonna see a bunch of strip time. If it was gonna be mostly street with a little strip I would run a 6 inch wheel and a 70 or 75 series front tire.

Re: Went better than expected

Local guy has a set of 15x6 or 7 Telstars with 15x10 with the 5x5 bolt pattern, I might go check them out and see if I want them.
That would loose some weight, and rotational at that!

I want to drive this truck ANYWHERE and right now I can do that so I want to keep it that way but I want it to haul butt at the track but that is what nitrous is for....to make up the difference....

how much lighter you think they are from the 15x8 Chrome rallys with 235/70/15s on the truck now!? Rears are chrome rallys with 275/50/15 DR. I would guess about 5-10#s each....that is ALOT of weight really.....for a set up I can still drive anywhere.

Re: Went better than expected

I also want to lower the truck, not too much but some for the looks.
I had first thought about lowering springs but with the drag racing bug in my blood I will eventually want a spring to let the weight transfer and I do not want to buy a bunch of parts over and over...
my brother has a set of the Chisolm (sp) lower A-arms that drop the spring pocket 2", do you have any thoughts on this route over other routes??

I thought about running air bags but that could become a safety issue so I do not think that is the right way to go...

Re: Went better than expected

Weigh the front of your truck then get super 73 to help you get a spring. You can get some stored energy and still get some drop. I tried dropped control arms on my old 71 but I wasn't that crazy about them.

Re: Went better than expected

I knew that would get some people going, LOL
I usually race in less than 1000' if possible and really like the negative DA!!
Heck, weather usually has more effect on the ET/MPH than any mods do in the N/A form.
Love trying to help people with their cars....MOST have no idea what DA is and how much that can help/hurt the car/truck and do not understand why they might have "slowed" down with more mods.

Re: Went better than expected

Shon are you on HCLS1?

I'd like to learn more about DA. What is the ideal DA? Can it be predicted a few hours before you go to the track? I'd like to make the 2 hour trip to a real drag strip, but I want to go on a day when it's good. I'd like to be able to check the weather/DA before I leave and if it's not good then just wait for another day to go racing...if that's possible.

Re: Went better than expected

maybe.......LOL, sent you a PM over there probably but everything is here. Some locals get on HCLS1 and going to keep this under wraps a little, LOL

Density Altitude helps me figure out what has helped. Weather has done more for me than any mods, LOL.
If the weather pattern is stable you could get close to predicting what the DA will be.
Need to know the elevation of the track and then I go to www.modulardepot.com and they have a link to calculators for DA and have a function to correct your ETs down to 0' DA and this is what I use to see what we picked up or lost.

Ideal DA is as low as you can get it. We have traveled 3-4hrs for negative DA to run a number. Not sure TX gets negative but you want it as low as possible!!

I have test fitted some from a IMPY SS and I did not like the fitment on the rear. but the ones I am going to get are from a truck so we will see, not sure he has been advertising the ones from the truck, the ISS ones were advertised all over....

If I was not stuck on 15x10s for the rear I would have picked up the local ones from the IMPY (actually the one I was looking at were from a Caprice with T56 swap, very cool car) but just did not like the tires and what all I was going to have to do to make them work on my truck.

hoping the other set I will go see/get will be perfect, they are on a truck now of the same era....

Re: Went better than expected

What rear springs are guys running in these trucks?
as mentioned, I want to lower it but I might wait till I get things moved around and get it weighed F/R so I can pick the right front springs, but I also want to drive this thing anytime anywhere I want.
I was looking for a 3/4 drop. just for looks.

I plan on putting a fuel tank between the rails sometime.

Guess I need to do the fuel thing before figuring out the suspension changes....
OR are these trucks not as finicky?
I am used to F-bods where it was pretty simple b/c I had done so many of those and they are much lighter.

Re: Went better than expected

picked up the Telstars today.
The truck needs a 3/4 drop for sure.
I like these but they will be my drag set up and the rallys will be for everyday use.
Hitting the track next TH night, should be fun!!
