Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

Is power steering RARE on a 68? Or is there a special type that was only available in 68? I have it on my 68, but i didn't know that it was that uncommon.

If I remember right what I call the ram type power steering were in both the '67 and '68.

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

I was under the impression that 67 had the ram style powersteering, and in 68 it went to the powersteering gearbox. But again, 40 year old trucks, lots of parts could have been changed and that could be a 68 with 67 steering, or a 67 with 68 fenders/bed.

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

My 68 looks similar to later style power steering. By ram style do you mean it just has a hyd. Cylinder that pushes the steering back and forth instead of the later style?

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

Yep, it is real possible that I was confused about the '68's having the ram style. If it is not the ram style why would the power steering on a '68 rare? I am always trying to learn more about these old trucks.

I have seen all kinds of body and parts change on these trucks.

I have seen a '63 body on a '69 frame.

My '67 C-20 body is on a '69 swb frame with '68 suspension and running gear.

That is what good about these old trucks though is how parts are interchangeable.

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

It was the ram style and it may have been 67 .It had the big back glass and I didn't pay close attention.I know you can put the gear box pwr steering on any year but I was just letting it be know for someone doing and orginal stlye restoration and might want that style.

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

My '68 has the ram style you speak of. It seems to be pretty inferior. Probably only someone doing an original resto would want one.

I thought the '67 frame wasn't "stamped" (like eight thru two) for power steering, and needs modification?

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

67's had the ram type power steering, and also some early 68's had it. I have a 52k original mile 68 that was a very early production truck and it had the ram type. Most 68 have the power box though

Re: original 68 stlye pwr steering

I have the Power assisted steering on my 1968 c-10 I took it off and rebuilt it using a kit was available for a corvette. Sound goofy but they used the same power steering up till 85 or so on the corvettes. I'm keeping mine on the truck. not sure what other people are doing with them. also not sure if it came original on the truck or if the old owner needed to add power steering .

You are correct, the frame on the '67 and early '68 doesn't have the dimple to clear the frame mounted power steering box. They will still bolt up but you have to space the box out to clear the frame or heat the frame and put the dimple in it.
