OK...based on recent experience with the Kansas State Highway Patrol. Kansas law is any vehicle purchased from out of state is subject to a vehicle inspection. They check the glove box spid, the door AND the frame VIN's. I asked about the numbers all matching. The nice troopers response was "If they don't match, we've got BIG problems". I didn't press for further explanation.

I've been thinking of doing a frame swap, maybe a cab too (typical newbie, mind swimming with ideas stuff). Have read many posts and build threads where this is done, or being done.

What are the laws in your state? Is Kansas just more anal than others? Or all y'all just planning on taking the truck to your grave? Or going to specifically sell in-state, if you do sell? Do you move the glove box door to a new cab? The frame number is the tough one...

Stuff is sure getting out of hand in some states.

Here in Texas, you walk into the courthouse with your check book and the old title and walk out with plates and registration. They mail you the new title within two weeks. They never even look at the vehicle, much less compare numbers.

Could you use the old vin plate with the new cab? Have two titles? Just thoughts that came to mind as I was reading your post.

Same thing for me in VA, walked in with the pold title and cash and walked out with a new title and registration. Even let me use the old 1970 truck plates with a one time fee and no more inspections at all....

THat's good because I'm switching the frame, glovebox door, stripped the cab, etc...

I say,... Inspect the truck with the cab you are going to use.
Get a title and license plates.

Then let the swapping begin!

In Maryland: All vehicles over 20 are eligible for an antique tag. You can also get a Hot Rod tag for over 25. Antique is not much changed, Hot Rod is a lot changed. Either way, you need the old title, lots of identification, proof of insurance and money. They never look at the vehicle. You are limited to weekend driving, to/from repair facilities, and "special events". The State Police generally don't hassle you on weekdays unless you drive an old POS every day and use antique tags just to get around the inspection requirement. You can also use a plate of the year of manufacture as long as you have the real tag inside the vehicle.

Here in az you take both titles one for the cab one for the frame theyll issue a new vin and link the old one in the computer the spid is meaningless to them

Kansas is a *****! They will crawl all over your truck, even check the motor if it from out of state, especially Arkansas. I think as long as you have titles for the frame and cab you are ok though, may have to apply for a builder title?

The DMV here in WY in the past few years too have been getting picky about #'s. They come and inspect and if #'s don't match you are labeled a criminal. Also a person can get a buiders title but it depericates value of truck about 1/2.

I live in Missouri and we sold a truck to a guy that lives in Kansas, it had a '69 frame, '63 body and unknown year motor, but was registered as a '63 here in Missouri. When he tried to register it in Kansas they gave him all kinds of hassle and would not register it. We had just finished a retoration on it and it was in near perfect condition. When we sold it to him we gave him the title for the body, '63.

He said they crawled all over checking numbers and when they did not match they would not register it. We then sent him the title for the frame, we have not heard back from him so I am not sure what happened.

When I moved to KS, all they did on my 72 was check the VIN in the doorjamb, noted what kind of rivets held it on, and sent me to the DMV to get my title. Seems like you guys have had some bad luck.

And to think, I was p!issed I even had to do that, so I kept everything else registered out of state.

gkeesru, I can get an antique title and antique plates here too, which is nice, only a one time deal, pay once and it's good "forever".

NORMSCOLORADO, I found out exactly where the frame number is, from the nice trooper. It's on the driver side top, viewable from the engine compartment. He also stated they're consistent with the location, usually within a 6" fore/aft area (scary huh?).

I'm thinking geez, if this trooper knows all this about vehicles, so do all the rest of them, which leads to thoughts of running down the road and getting pulled over running a "criminalized" rig.

I've also noticed on the Kansas website that "builders" titles no longer exist. Showing my age here, but back in the 80's getting one was no problem.

Here in Maine, the don't want to title a vehicle this old.
Just pay the money and grab the plates. If you have
a very expensive older vehicle, they will make an exception
and issue a title, but it costs you !

Dang this brings up other horror stories about pieced together vehicles and the DMV. We've all heard them. Some are true.
I heard of a guy out in west Tx who like many put too many hours and dollars into his old truck. Used parts of various rigs and all. Real nice truck and no registering probs in Tx. Drove it out toward Cali and got stopped for some reason. Truck looked real good so the nice officer wanted to look it over and asked some questions about the build and all. Owner obliged him with info on what was used from this vehicle and that one. Sneaky officer was digging. So he decided he better check the vin #s and of course they did not match. Long story short they confiscated his truck and he had to get a lawyer to defend himself. I do not know if he was ever cleared or his truck was returned to him or not.

Well here in cali they only want your thumb print, drivers license, first born child, bank statements, what color underwear you are wearing, how many guns you own and if you are a registered republican, well you are screwed
