Steering column woes....

1992 gmc. My windshield wiper/cruise control switch doesn't seem to work too well. The wipers only work on high speed. And, my column shifter arm(automatic transmission) is very loose. I smack the key when shifting gears. What are the fixes for these issues? It's a tilt column

Re: Steering column woes....

If you are saying the tilt mechanism is loose, here are some steering column sites with photos that tell how to repair loose tilt columns. The photos should be helpful what ever problem you are having.

Looks like on this site he did the quick fix and did not take it apart far enough to tighten all four fasteners.

If you are saying just the shift lever/arm is loose, then the spring in the column that pushes on the bottom end of it has probably broken.

The wipers only working on high speed could be a Switch, wiring, or wiper motor problem. The module/circuit board on these trucks has a common failure where the solder cracks on the circuit board. If you know how to solder, it is an easy fix.

Re: Steering column woes....

It's just the shifter arm that is sloppy, not the tilt neck. Is it possible to replace (or even buy) the spring for the arm?

I have only ever run across one that had the spring break. I replaced just the spring. It was available at the dealer but this was about 20 years ago.

Re: Steering column woes....

Has anyone here attempted to repair/tighten up their tilt column. I picked one up for $100 and it is a little loose, not too bad , but I want it tightened up. Is this pretty do-able?

By the way, it's out of a 77 1/2 ton, going in a 77 1/2 ton... Tilt w/ column shift
