max towing trailer weight for a 1971 c10 suburban

I want to get the max towing/trailer weight on the new title here in holland.
Therefore i need an official document.

To get that document i need a few papers.
This is what they ask for.
"I require the option codes on your truck, I believe on the fender under the hood and any GVWR labels"

I don't have them for my Suburban.
Can someone scan them or photograph them.
I have a 1971 C10 suburban with a 350 engine, it originally had a 3speed.

I do have the glove box but i don't think that's enough.

Re: max towing trailer weight for a 1971 c10 suburban

my 72 burb brochure says 5500 pounds for 1/2 ton and 6000 for 3/4 ton. that's with 2wd, at least a 350 v8, automatic and good towing gear (3.73, 4.10 or better). i would say 7,000 pounds is a good number if you have the 350/auto/3.73 setup and drive on level grades. a 383 build up might be a good idea if the engine is worn out. you NEED 3/4 ton (1/2 ton option) rear coil springs if you will be towing anything heavier than a small boat or utility trailer and i also strongly recommend a front sway bar. some of the 73-87 generation 3/4 and 1 ton trucks had a 1-1/4 inch sway bar vs the 1-1/8 inch unit on our trucks. very cheap bolt on upgrade if you source from a junk yard. and don't forget trailer brakes too!

this summer, my 72 burb 3/4 ton 2wd will be towing a 6,000 pound camper with the stock 307, 3 on the tree manual and 4.10 rear gear. as it sits right now in original condition it has a 2 barrel and 4.57 rear gear. i have a big aftermarket sway bar on my truck from CPP and will be installing the matching rear bar eventually. i also have poly track bar bushings already installed and a pair of poly bushings for the trailing arms ready to go on. i want that rear end as tight as a drum while i'm towing and nearly 40 year old rubbber ain't gonna cut it on a trailing arm system.

i am in the process of swapping in a 4 row radiator and installing an edelbrock performer intake manifold (idle-5500 rpm range) topped by a remanufactured quadra jet carb. i won't have a ton of power, but it will do the job for the short term. some day i may be towing much larger and heavier trailers with the truck after i swap in my 406sbc and put the 3/4 ton HD option rear coil springs on. no reason it can't haul 10-12,000 pound trailer if properly equipped because it is a 3/4 ton truck.

Re: max towing trailer weight for a 1971 c10 suburban

yes, they were sold in canada like most other american cars were/are. don't understand why you'd need documents and need to put the trailer weight limit on your registration. only vehicles here that have weight limits are 18 wheelers. as long as you have trailer brakes and other proper equipment, you can pull just about anything that will fit down the road. i also have a 1972 chevy trailer towing guide and it has ridiculously low gcwr's....likely due to low engine performance back then.

my dad had a 72 suburban w/ auto and 3.73 rear gears....back in the 80's. he replaced the tired 350 with a 305 (same crankshaft) out of a '77 monte carlo. he ran the stock quadra-jet carb and the only mods were an rv grind cam, camaro oil pump and cheap dual exhaust. he pulled the family camper, a 6,000 pound '71 holiday trav'ler 23 footer, all over the place for several years with that truck with no problems.

you may just have to plead with the DMV over there if you are required to have that info on the registration. i say it should be good for a 6-7,000 pound trailer on moderate roads. my dad later had an 84 burb w/ the same 350/auto/3.73 combo and it was rated for a 7,000 pound trailer.

Try looking at this... its a brochure from the 71 suburban. click on '71' then click on burb8.jpg it has plenty of info, surely thats enough proof. Copy it and show them?
