OK and NO it not for sale

I was able to pick this up from the Powder Coating shop today. There are a few very minor imperfection in it, but I'm very happy how it turned out. I can't afford to have it chromed right now (last thing I'll end up doing on the truck. The guy does great work and I'll have my extra set of Vavle Covers Chromed next. The shop is called Extreme Powder Coating 1849 Enterprise Dr. Harvey, LA. 504-347-1127. Becasue there was a few small speks in it, he refused to charge me at all.

I won this off Ebay in 2007 for $380.00 and it was in rough shape. The Powder coated dis a great job

WOW Jake that looks great....you can't hardly tell it's not chrome. Did they shoot that with chrome powder and then clear?

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

Wow, thanks for posting. I have to redo the grille on my '55 Stude which consists of 3 large pieces and can run $2,000 or more for a rechrome which is not in the budget. I was wondering how powder coating might work. Looks like it will work just fine.

Re: OK it's finished and NO it's not for sale

At a later date I'm going to mask and paint the black shading on the nose, wingroot pod intakes and exhaust in the rear. It's so purty I hate to fool with it. I decide to do the extra set of valve covers in this finish too.

As far as how they did it I do believe they coated then applied the clear. I have to stop by the shop next week and take some more pictures of his process. This is a new process according to the owner that he was unsure about, he's still a little upset on the specks, some is the underlaying material (pitting issues) and some might be a speck of dust. He's still playing around with the booth that is set up just for the chrome finish.

I'm totally happy with the way it turned out and unless something happens to the finish I may keep it this way for a while.

Jake

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

The powder coater I use has a powder called 'chrome' and they always put clear over it. I'm curious if the powder your powder coater uses is something different since you say it is a relatively new process. I do know that powder coating over chrome, particularly pitted and peeling chrome, can be a big PITA to get to come out nice.

hhhummmm! chrome powdercoating on a 64-66 painted steel grill would make it look like the factory anodized grill.i love it.

i have the same hood ornament, but i got it from one of the local junkyards for free.90free. but then again i used to be in there all the time so the cut me great deals. and mine was sitting in the back of a 62 gmc burb that was going to get crushed so they didn't bother charging me for it since it was just lying around in the back. i tried to clean the pitted and peeling chrome as much as i could but gave up and just sprayed a quick couple of coats of flat black on it, and mine is in way worse shape than yours was. yours was leaps and bounds better than mine. its the one in my avatar. i'd love to find another one of these. quick question, what did these originally come on?

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

The history of this ornament(s)

In 1955-1959 GMC had designed an Ornament you can see here on the right, note the longer nose and the verticle wingroot vents on the unit on the right.

In 1960 GMC redesigned the ornament to reflect the new design of the new hood, this ornament was only produced for 2 years because it could only fit the 60-61 hood. When both lines changed to the 62-66 flat hood, there were no more factory designed or authorized ornaments sold from the companies themselves. Although many a guys have used all sorts of things from the likes of earlier models and/or JC WHITNEY Catalogs.

As you can see in the 1960 Accessory booklet cover

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

60 ratrod,

I had another one that was in really terrible shape, I should not even tried to fool with it, BUT you now us guys and our trucks, I got thgat one for $75.00 but I sold it to another trucker who wanted to try and repair it for display or to use on his truck.

What just about killed me on this one was I was at Crusing the Coast in 2007 and the bidding was to end on Satuday and I would be away from the net all day, all I could do was drop my high bid of $400.00 and walk away, I just knew I was going to lose this one too, I'd been looking for one for over 6 years, after spending all day in car and truck heaven, I was notified that I won!

THEY ARE REALLY RARE TRUST ME. The 55-59 is rare but since they produced it for 4 years, so more are out there.

I'd love to have a case of them to sell I could buy all sorts of things!

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

I was talking to my powder coater about this today, and he's thinking that your coater may be using the product/process that Edelbrock uses for their Endurashine finish. He said that a couple years ago he tried to find what Edelbrock uses, but no one had any idea what they used. Maybe it has since become available.

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

i remember looking at this thread from awhile back...just came across it again after a search...i just found a similar looking hood ornament that is on a '66 listed on Craigslist...it's a non-running, most likely parts truck which i know technically shouldn't have the ornament....i requested an up-close pic of the hood ornament to see exactly what it is....but i was wondering if you ever found out more about the powder coating process used on your ornament? i never really thought about it, but Captainfab brings up a good point about Edelbrock's Endurashine finish....thanks for any new info!

looks great! I would love to re do my grill and front bumper like that.
I had my valve covers cleared (so I wont have to polish them) and my intake powder coated to look like polished aluminum (intake looks better in person).

Re: OK and NO it not for sale

Yes it did dull the polish aluminum a slight bit. I thought that they would have been worse. but I really didnt want them super shiny anyways. Plus I dont have to polish. just a tad bit of soap and water and its clean.

Oh btw if you look at my motor, the air cleaner has not been powder coated clear. kinda give you a feel what the clear does to them but I'll have pics up tomorrow.
