Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

I need to have my windshield installed on the C10.
I called every glass guy in the area and most of them won't
do the job because it has the custom stainless trim.
The one guy that said he could came over and attempted for three hours to get it in and decided that the LMC weather seal
wasn't very good. He said he would get a good one and come back. He then tried (With the "Good" weather seal) for an additional three hours and no go! He got the owner of the glass shop on the phone and the guy told me that he would come over on Saturday to do the job himself. That's where I stand for now.
What kind of experiences have you guys had with installation trouble? Did I just get the wrong glass guy?

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

Are you using aftermarket stainless? Stuff doesn't fit very well on the bottom curve of the windshield. Stainless must be installed in the rubber, before installing the windshield in the truck!!! If it doesn't fit there, it won't fit after you get it in.

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

As it is not a piece of cake job, any good glass company should be able to do it. My glass company intalled my new windshield with no issues.

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

I think there are 2 different styles of stainlees trim windshied rubber as well. from what Ive read on here, there are 2 different depth`s (where the stainless mounts in the seal) available

That is correct. The stainless has to match the rubber seal or vice-versa. Some of the stainless has a 3/8" lip and some has a 5/8" lip. If you don't have the correct rubber seal for your trim it won't work....

Thats right. IIRC, 67 - 70 is one style and '71 - '72 is the other. You have to get the correct rubber for the style trim you have.

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

I just had my windshields (front and back) installed a few weeks ago.

I called one company and they were like "oh yeah, no problem". And I knew they were a PITA.

The company that I had install it said they were a PITA and would only do it at their shop and the owner would actually do it (who I was talking to) and explained to me why they were so difficult. So I finally got time for them to do it, and it pretty much took them all day (and had to redo it when the trim popped out or something). But finally they got it done. He really dislikes the trim and said I should have gone with the standard seal....but hey, I like the way the trim looks and it was easy for me...just whip out the plastic (credit card that is )

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

Call around your area.....there will be people that know exactly how to install these. I found a guy that has probably installed 200 windshields and back glass in these trucks. He and a helper were at my house for less than two hours and did both the front (with trim) and the back (with trim). He supplied the windshield (PPG) and I supplied the back glass, Precision rubber and original stainless trim. My total cost for the job was $ 265.00. It definately was the best money I have spent on my truck!

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

sourkrout and I tried to install one for four hours one night (actually morning by then) and gave up... Having a good quality seal is the key, I have heard that Precision is the best, don't try the one from The Truck SHop....

The local glass guy installed it in 45 minutes by himself, would have been sooner with a better seal.

Remember, if they break your glass then it's not their fault... If you buy the glass from them then it's covered until they get it installed...

I'm 80 miles from Fontana. The shop owner is suppose to come over to attempt another install tomorrow. If he can't get it, I might have to flat bed it to Fontana. No surprise...This glass install has already cost me three weather seals and $240. in flat bed fees so far.

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

The corners are the killer especially if the rubber is crap which most of it is. Lots of shops are using Mexican manufactured glass which is thinner then PPG which makes for more issues. Look for another truck guy for a referral shop. You'll save a lot of time and money in the long run.

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

The new w/s's are much thinner and harder to smack in without breaking. The last truck with a gasket style was made over 20 years ago. Hard to believe as an old glass man! The newer guys have only really been around nothing but glue in w/s's. The older independent shops are your best bet to find a older installer who has been around these. These chain shops are 95% insurance work, so they work only stuff from the last 5-8 years up. And hire young butchers who can install quantity not quality. As for PPG glass, yes they are better than most but still probably made overseas.........

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

huh me and a buddy that used to work for safeflight auto glass had mine in in about 20 mins.... spray the s#*t out of the seal with glass cleaner, set the bottomwork around the corners then run a thin putty knife up the sides... the the hard part is to get the 2 top corners in... pull down on the windsheild to be sure the bottom is set... the very carefully start your top in the middle and work you way out then gentley work the corners in..... but we forgot to put my chrome trim in first! lol

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

These Windshields are a pain to install but some tips and tricks dont hurt either, I Have installed alot of these and here is a few hints I will say have helped me in the past. using some WD40 to spray on the rubber seal and using a small rope all the way inside the seal where the seal sits on the metal lip on the truck. having someone hold it in place while pulling the rope out of the rubber. this usually works for the best and fastest for me any how.

I sure hope someone comes up with a glue in style windshield soon... the rubber seals are ugly and sucky to deal with.

I totally agree, I had the owner of a glass shop come to put mine in a 72 with stainless trim, what a wreck. They couldn't get it in broke my glass ruined my rubber left me hangin high and dry. Called the man I should have. Came out with a PPG glass, new Precision rubber for both the shallow and deep trim depending which one I had. Had the windshield and back glass in in about 1 1/2 best $280 I spent, even gave him a tip. He's coming back out end of this month to do my '68. He said the Precision rubber is the only way to go.

Exactly right!! Along with good quality glass and to be sure that the gasket is for the correct year. Soft seal and other brands do not fit well and are a PITA to install even without the trim. They also bunch up and don't seal well. If you have a precision gasket and either PPG, or pilkington glass, it shouldn't be a big problem. WES

Re: Did I choose the wrong glass guy?

We have many of our local glass companies contact us for our seals for the trucks because we stock only Precision brand seals for the 47-current trucks since we have them on hand, they ALL swear by the precision made made seals. We have several restoration shops in Indianapolis that regulary pick up our complete cab rubber kits because again they know they can rely on the fit of the preciision brand seals. So 1st thing I would ask any installer is what brand seal they plan on using before hiring them if they are supplying the seal and if you are INSIST on only Precision.
We currently have a cab rubber kit special on sale on our site made up of our lifetime warranty Precision weatherstriping for anyone else looking to avoid this sort of problem that includes all the cab weatherstriping from Precision and we include the option for those wishing to do away with glue-on door seals that you can upgrade to a Push-On version that requires no glue.
for those interested you can check it out at the following link
