how to get starter off?
I have a 350 motor in a 72 burb. I'm about to go crazy trying to get this starter off. Am I seeing this right, there are 2 bolts for the back and 1 for the front? I can get the first bolt off that in the back but the other one closer to the block I don't see how I can get a wrench back there to get it off or the front.
Can someone tell me how to do this? Thanks in advance, Joe |

Re: how to get starter off?
What is in your way?
The only bolt I know of in the front, is some trucks had an extra bracket up there. You should be able to get to everything pretty easily. You may need an extension to clear the transmission dust cover, but unless I'm missing something because it's a burb, it's pretty straight forward. Is the exhaust in the way or something? |

Yes, the exhaust is in the way. Am I correct that there are 3 bolts that need to come off? I'm not sure b/c I've never done this before.
Thanks for the help, Joe |

Re: how to get starter off?
I hate to say this, but we really need a picture.
It should only be 2 bolts, the 2 at the back. It should come out even if the pipe is in the way. Sometimes you have to wiggle and work it out. Need a pic. |

Re: how to get starter off?
ooops, I think i found my mess up. I was trying to get the crome cylender off, but that's only half of it right. The 2 bolts I have to take off are at the bottom?? I've taken those off but it won't come, do I need to bang it off?

Re: how to get starter off?
There are only two bolts that hold the starter to the block. It sounds like the chrome cylinder you are referring to is the solenoid. That will come off with the starter. Just be careful with the wires that are attached to the starter when you start trying to wiggle it out of there. There should be two, sometimes three wires, one large one and one or two small ones. Mark which terminals you take the wires off of so you get them back on the right posts when you re-install the new starter. Sometimes the posts on new solenoids aren't on the same side as the old soleniod but they are marked with a letter identifying which one goes where. Normally the only other real big pain is that on some trucks the tranny cooler lines run right underneath the starter. Good luck, be patient

Always always always disconnect your battery before working on the starter motor.

Re: how to get starter off?
I have a 3spd tranny. Should my starter have 3 bolts holding it on? It only has 2 holding it on but has an upper 3rd hole with threads in it? whats that for? thanks

I believe the manual tranny is suppose to have 3 bolts supporting the starter. If it's like mine, the top bolt goes in the opposite direction than the 2 bottom ones. |
