1970 Axle details

What were the axel options on a 1970 Chevy 3/4 2wd pickup? I do not have a posi and I am not sure if I have a splitter or what it is if it isn't a splitter. Also what were the gears available in this year? They feel like 3.08s, but I could be wrong. I do know that it is a HO52.

Thanks for the help.

Really. Well it certainly does not accelerate like a 4.10 or 4.56 would. The transmission could be regeared, but I dont hear much of that with a TH350. Can you tell me if this is a splitter or not?

That is the eaton rear.I am not positive but I think you could get 354 or something in that neighborhood also.

4.10, 4.56, and a 5.13 was all you could get. The 3.54 was a Dana only gearing.
The splitter option was not on light duty trucks.

Re: 1970 Axle details

Ok well have you heard of anyone re-gearing a TH350? I have a built motor and it takes off really well, but what gets me is that 3rd gear is like 4th gear in a 700R4. It just seems to me that the gearing is not close to even a 4.10. If that is an Eaton what info can you give me on it. If I go to re-gear it what is it going to run me and how stout are they? Is the 3/4 ton considered a light duty back then? And what is on my differential if it isnt a splitter? Thanks for the help!

Re: 1970 Axle details

The eaton rears were good rears. I think they used them from '60-'72 in pickups and vans. They made a 3.90 aftermarket but they are hens teeth to find. Parts are hard to find for them, But seals are still available from NAPA the last time I asked. The large nut on the side is a torque bolt to keep the ring from flexing under load. Splitters were on larger trucks C40 and up, Even the H110 (11000lb) axle didn't have a splitter.
My 4.10 H072 and turbo 400 30" tires will run about 2600rpm at 55mph and at 60mph it runs about 2900rpm.

Well thats good to know. I just figured I would try and find out some more details on it. I can accelerate like no other and alot of that is due to my motor, but when I put her in 3rd gear I can do 55 at about 1800-1900RPMs. That why i was thinking I was higher geared. Thanks for all the help.
