my daily driven '68 LWB 5.3/4l60e

This is my '68 LWB bought new from the local dealership (Smith Chevrolet in Fort Smith, Ar). I bought it from the second owner and it was all original when I got it. Added the rear bumper, the seat and the 5.3/4l60e. Check out the options on this truck....anyone elses this stripped down?

You'd never know it from the outside of the truck that it's sporting a modern engine and tranny!

Congrats! Nice truck.

Nice truck! I bet you blow the minds of a lot of the tuner crowd when leaving a stoplight, . I may be moving to Springdale sometime this summer. Seems like there are a lot of our trucks in that area.

Yes there are a lot of 67-72 trucks here, especially in the Siloam Springs area. If you move here I've got to see your Suburban.....looks amazing in the pictures and I'm sure its even better in person.

Nice and clean truck. We're starting to have a good showing of Arkansas trucks on this site. I'm trying to get mine finished as well. 68 C20 with 5.3 and 4l60e. Your picture of the shifter cable setup is helping to convince me it can be done. Is that the stock length cable for the Lokar kit. Mine seems a little short, but I also have my engine and tranny set back kinda far. We got to convince Hart Rod to move this way. Get some classy looking rides up here. What guages are those your running also. Thanks. Jim

Very nice truck! What kind of fuel pump are you using? How many mpg? I hope to be starting my 71 c10 4x4 LT1/4l60e swap soon.

I'm trying to get a position with Tyson. Hopefully I'll know something in the next couple of weeks (corporate doesn't move very fast....). Either way, my cousin lives there and I plan on making some visits. I'm not sure when I'll be driving the burb though......

I drive up to do work at Gates Rubber in Siloam Springs every couple of months. I take the truck every time. I'll pm you next time.

eagleuh1: I used the cable that came with the lokar kit. Love it, works perfect. Feels a lot better than the stock linkage. Also, I installed the shoulder belts.....just felt like I needed to as much as its driven. Im using the factory gauges. Speedo is run with a Abbott cable converter. It works pretty well, but there is another company making one that doesn't use a cable......looks like its a lot better design.

Dan s: I'm using a Walbro 255 pump with the factory tank. I love the factory look. Fortunately my tanks in great shape. I drilled a hole in the bottom and gravity fed the pump and used the factory line as a return. I was worried because the factory tank has no baffles, but its been working perfect for 3 years.

What do you do? What kind of position at Tyson? Hope it works out.....I really feel like I need to see your ride! I have a thing for Suburbans. Almost bought a 3 door '68 4x4 Suburban with a 292 / 3 speed. Wish I did every time I think about it.

Management/Engineering. I'm looking at several positions, hopefully they'll pick me for one of them, , I would really like to get back in the area. The burb will eventually make it out that way, I'm just not sure when, .

Very cool sleeper - even better since you have all the original paperwork. I used to live over in Fort Smith myself. There are 3 or 4 of us on the board from the Little Rock area too.

Next on my list of "to do's" is to put the original accelerator pedal in and make it work with the dbw throttle body. I think it will be neat to have the floor mounted pedal with dbw and cruise control. The cruise works great.....use it nearly everyday on the interstate when going to work.

Can you give details on your cruise setup? What handle did you use? What all is involved?

Re: my daily driven '68 LWB 5.3/4l60e

I used a factory headlight switch......you can see it in one of my interior pictures. Its in the factory manual choke location. Its kinda lame if you're into chrome and billet, but my requirements were to keep it factory appearing. I wired it so that pulling the switch out, like the headlights are on, enables the cruise. To engage the cruise you rotate the dimmer part of the switch. The dbw setup on the genIII tac module has everything you need. I didn't bother with an accel switch, it wasn't that important to me. The lame part is that the tac module needs to see a high to low transition for the engage input, so you you have to rotate the dimmer switch towards the on position then back to the off position. The dimmer is just a potentiometer, so you only have to rotate enough to generate the correct voltage for the input and then back. It works well and is safe. You have to have the switch pulled out to use it and the tac module has an input for the brake switch. I did have to use a relay to get a normally closed contact. I'd like to put a small torsional spring on the dimmer part of the switch so that it will spring back and feel a little better.

Sweet truck, I like the stock appearance and patina. What did you use for radiator and fans? I'm in the process of rounding up parts to put a 4.8/4l60e in my 67. I got both engine and trans with 60,000 miles for $750 and the 20 horsepower difference didn't seem like that big a deal for the price.

Re: my daily driven '68 LWB 5.3/4l60e

I used a radiator from a '95 silverado with a 4.3 v6 and the factory 5.3 clutch fan. I finished this swap 3 years ago and wanted to do it with parts that could be bought at the local parts stores , so the radiator just made sense. The hoses are the factory 5.3 hoses....I had to cut the lower hose a little shorter, but they worked well.
