Check the float level. Backfire could also be a timing issue.
I had a 441 Victor. Cool Bike

Re: How do u adjust a carb if it is running lean??

You need to adjust your floats to the correct setting and set your air/fuel mixtier scews on the front of the carb. This can also be from incorrect metering rods or springs.

Re: How do u adjust a carb if it is running lean??

You are sure it is a Carter brand quadrajet? I have had some experience with these carbs and it could be that your bowl and carb body has some defects in it. The Carter Quads have no bushings inserted in the body, where the needles go through it and the metal has a tendency to errode away and then you have a rich operation. If you go find a Rochester Quad and use that body, then you have the bushings inserted and the carb tunes stay where you set them. My experience was that the engine would run, but the transition into the secondaries created a big BOG due to the overfeeding of fuel. This is a simple but can be a costly situation.

Re: How do u adjust a carb if it is running lean??

You can remove the top of the carb to access the float and rods with it still on the engine...

Re: How do u adjust a carb if it is running lean??

Yes it is a carter. it was a dealer replacement carb that the owner before my gpa and he had, had it replaced. I rebuilt it and idk what my gpa adjusted the float too.

iks dvcn- thank u for the video i will watch it when i am somewhere i can here it haha

piecesparts- yea when i slow down i begins to bog but it doesnt really do it till my motor is at operating temp. Im planning on rebuilding my motor this summer and im just gonna put a edelbrock intake and carb on it. so there isnt a reason to buy a rochester. Thank u for the help though i didnt have a clue about that stuff.

GASoline71- Ok thanks

John P.- That page was a lot of help thanks.
