Stick with Muncie 4 speed or switch to TH350?
Hey,
Well my 4 speed Muncie is leaking out of its front and rear seals. I am not equipped to do it myself. So I went and got some price qoutes to get it fixed. Well, most places qouted 1000 bucks to do the work, they won't just change the front and rear seals though. They buy a kit and rebuild the whole transmission and stuff. I know i can get a used TH350 for pretty cheap. I drive my truck everyday...so i'm looking for reliability and driveability. What would it take to change to an auto? Would it be worth it? or should i just have my muncie fixed? thanks for the help PD |

The front and rear seals cost a grand total of about $13 total and dont require any special tools or skills to install. If its just your seals that are leaking then theres no use changing over. If you want an automatic then thats a different story but its really not difficult to change the seals. Once the transmission is out it is a 3 minute job and it does not have to be disassembled other than popping the old seals out with a screwdriver and knocking the new ones in.

I agree, the seals are very easy to change out. It might take a whole hour to two hours for the entire job. Drop the tranny, drink a cold one, change the seals, drink a cold one, stab the tranny, drink a cold one, re-attach everything, drink a few cold ones and then you're done. If we knew where you're located, you just might get somebody local to offer to help out. If you're in my area, I know I would offer to help and teach.

I don't know how to hyperlink to a site, but go to www.gearzone.net/muncie.htm and you can find how low cost overhaul kits are for your tranny. I bought a completely rebuilt one from a friend for $650. That included bell housing, flywheel, pressure plate and clutch plate. (I guess it links automatically -- I don't know much about computers)
