Briggs and Stratton Key?
The key to my 68 chevy has a Briggs and Stratton key? Anyone know why?

The previous owner may have put a Briggs and Stratton ignition switch in or maybe your ignition switch is worn enough that any key that goes in it will turn it.

They made keys and locks. Remember the Auto makers assembled cars made with parts from many suppliers. GM did not make everything they used.

He-he. Funny about keys...the key for my '78 olds starts my '68 Chev parts truck and, why back when, I could
start my '52 Willy's P/U with my Kennedy tool box key. Go figure...had more into my tool box than I did into the truck. Sorry, guess that wasn't too helpful an answer...

The company I work for has a bunch of Case brand skid steers, and of course when they are new they come with Case keys, but twice I've gone to get a copy made and one time the guy used a B&S blank and the other time an AMC blank. And they all look pretty much identical to the GM key for my Panel.

my 64 malibu ss,65 malibu wagon and 67 gmc dually all use briggs keys and the 64 and the 67 are origanal key codes.

Keith is right. Briggs & Stratton has been supplying GM's locks and keys since 1926. When you order as many keys as GM does they will imprint anything you want on them...  LockDoc

On one of my sets of keys for the truck the ignition key has a Cadillac symbol.
The other says "True Value" as in the hardware store where I had the key duplicated from the Caddie key. When I worked at the shop it was quite common for a customer to lock their keys in the car. We had a jar of keys people left over the many years. Before you tried the slim jim you tried all the keys in the jar. I rarely had to use the slim jim to get in. There are only so many patterns that they cut. It is on the order of 20 or so. So in other words if you go to a shopping mall and there are 20 cars from the same manufacturer in the lot manufactured in the same time frame as yours, you probably have a key that works. Of course modern keys with the computer chip in them don't fall in this category. You'll be able to get in the door but you won't be able to start it.
