power steering question/problem

the think i am having trouble with is when i go lock to lock it has 1" to go on the pass side but the gearbox runs out of movement and can go/push past lock on driverside. do i have my pitman arm not in the right position on the gearbox spline? i thought i had it centered but must not have? if i am thinking correctly it goes in 1/4 incriments on the spline and am not sure if i just need to move it 1/4 turn in the correct direction so that it has the same distance? let me know what you guys think or if anyone ele has ran into this.
