Seal kit for power steering box?

The power steering box on my 72 GMC is leaking. I went to napa and I cant buy just seals..I have to buy a whole rebuild kit and its like $60 and the box is perfectly fine, except its leaking. I just need the pitman arm shaft seal and the seal thats on the top of the box, I think its called the worm gear seal or something, its the one thats leaking the most. Does anyone know where I could find just those?? I looked at LMC and Brothers but I couldn't find anything on there. I just may have to call them, but I thought I'd ask and see if you guys new of anywhere.

Thanks!

Where is it leaking? You can buy a seperate input seal and also the output shaft seal. I bought mine at carquest and we looked it up to find the part. This was one of my first repairs before I did my frame off on this truck. I will try and dig up part numbers if you dont find anything tommorow.

Re: Seal kit for power steering box?

Try Truckandcarshop.com. They have several different rebuild kits and the prices aren't too bad. Just not sure what you need exactly. Is there a way to take it apart and just take the seals you need to an industrial supply place? I know there are usually hydraulic servicing places in the industrial areas of cities and they would know exactly what size and material you need. Usually only cost a few pennies.

I blew up a transmission a while back and got an estimate of about $700 to fix it. All I needed was the main bearing so I went to a bolts and bearings place. I actually picked one up for $12 and put it in. If you find the main suppliers in your area you can save mucho dinero!

I've always gotten the idividual seals at Carquest. If you need both sets though the complete kit shouldn't be much higher. There is not a whole lot more in it.

Re: Seal kit for power steering box?

Yea I tried that Lucas oil stuff..but it still leaks. So I'm just going to replace the two seals. I just need the pitman arm shaft seal and that seal that goes around the shaft at the top of the steering box where the steering column connects to it. What is that one called?

the input shaft seal? both seals are easy as I did them both. I pulled the entire box off the truck and used the workbench. I just used my smalln seal pick and dental pick and worked them both out. took a few hours. you can buy an entire rebult unit for around $250

Re: Seal kit for power steering box?

just last week I bought just an input shaft seal from NAPA. Search the Napa website. You can find the part numbers. Maybe you need to try a different counter guy.

Pitman shaft seal

Input shaft seal
