speaker box

i skinned my doors due to rust and i dont wanna cut a speaker hole in the door like they had previously.. so i looked on the internet and found a small box to fit my 6x9 inch speaker.. im thinking they will fit under the seat they are a bit angled so if i face them forward they wont touch the ground.. would this sound good?

Re: speaker box

I put speakers under the seat, and faced them upward. They sounded terrible.
The seat muffled the sound. I could not face them forward, because they would hit the bottom of the seat. If I sat on the seat it was worse. I put mine in the doors.

Re: speaker box

I bought a couple of box speakers on ebay that are only about 4 inches tall and about 10 inches wide. They are 3 way and were pretty reasonable. They sound pretty good and no holes cut. Even decent bass. Having yours tilted up on an angle might make a difference. Tough to test without actually doing it because a speaker sitting on the floor sounds totally different than when it is mounted in a box. Good luck.

Re: speaker box

You can buy plastic kick panels with speaker mounts in them (down were your vents are buy your foot) I got a pair in my truck and they have i think 6.5" not 6x9's in them. There are a few places that sell them.

Re: speaker box

I made a set of low profile 6x9 boxes out of aluminum and used the two door panel screws to mount along the top, and some adhesive on the bottom.

Re: speaker box

They're low profile compared to the wooden carpeted ones. They're just deep enough to clear the magnet on the 6x9s.

Re: speaker box

I wasnt dogging on you about your speaker boxes, sorry if it came off that way. I think the idea of using door panel screws is awesome. very intuitve box there. I just cut the doors on mine because the speakers I have are really shallow and are flush mounted.. you can always do what my grandfathers shophands did back in the 80s ans wire the speakers in and just drop them between the seat and cab corner space LOL.

Re: speaker box

When I bought my truck it had a pair of computer speakers mounted to the shoulder seat belt holes. I had to move them because I installed shoulder belts and also they were ugly, so I just hung them off the bottom of the seat, facing forward. Surprisingly they sound pretty decent. I don't know where I will end up, but for now - not too bad.

Re: speaker box

I had speakers under seat angled forward and upward - they didn't sound very good. I now have the LMC kick panel mounted speakers - they sound much better. For an even better sound, use more expensive speakers with a couple of tweeters under the dash.

Re: speaker box

I was installing some speakers designed to hang in the top cab corner and tossed them on the dash between the defrost holes in the center where the old radio speaker slots are. They looked and sounded ok so I left em there.

Re: speaker box

We have the speaker kick panels for the 6" or 6 1/2" speakers without speakers installed. $79.95 per pair. WES

Re: speaker box

Those little 6x9" speaker boxes never sound good and allow no extension of the cone hindering any low end you would get from them - for free I wouldn't even take them. Even the 6x9's that I have in the doors are muffled a bit due to their low placement and with the soundwaves getting absorbed immediately in the carpet pile. To counter this I put 5-1/4's in the dash with seperate tweets and with the combo of both, it sounds great.

To fill in the low end is a couple 8's

Re: speaker box

One option, which still will require some cutting would be to get a set of door speakers from a 2004-6 GTO. I picked this set up for a guy who ended up not needing them, and am considering using them in my truck. They stick out some, but also offer some direction to the speaker, not just flat.

Re: speaker box

I didn't cut my doors. Made custom panels with fiberglass speaker pods.

No offense taken. They are intrusive with the doors open, but when in the cab with the door shut, you don't notice them and they're actually tucked out of the way.

Beatcoaster, nice install work with the subs there!

Re: speaker box

The best thing to do would be to get new speakers in some proper kick panels.. You can move the 6x9's to the cab corners that will make them more "effective."
