door mirror nuts inserts
Does anyone know where I can get the nut inserts for the Stainless steel mirrors on door-below eyeline large mirrors. thanks in advance.
I ended up using a nos door skin I had beacause 1 door had issues. and it has no provisions to mount the mirror. It should have 3 holes of which 2 are the nut inserts and one is just a hole. So I just need 2 inserts. Last edited by HOGDADDY; 04-10-2010 at 10:16 PM. |

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
You can buy them from a supply company. They have various brand names such as Nutserts, Rivet-Nut, etc. You will need the tool as well. Be sure to put the reinforcement plate behind them or the skin will crack.

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
There was no reinforcement plate on the originals just the inserts. I found some called jacknuts
The only reinforcement I had to add was behind the door handle it had 4 tiny spotwelds 3 of em around the button hole and 1 on other end of piece. I may add some panel adhesive too (or an xtra spotweld) I dunno. Btw I forgot about it til you mentioned the reinforcement thanks n2trux. I can add it on even with the door skin in place by drilling a few small holes on outside of door panel and try be real easy on spotwelds with my mig. Re: door mirror nuts inserts
Maybe its a dealer item. I didn't see anything like that on autozone. Have you asked your local parts store?

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
They are still available from GM. The part number is 367292, Group 16.0069. They are around $2.69 each

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
Did a little research on this and the true name is a Jack Nut. Here is a link for those who care.

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
The local Chevy dealer had them in stock (said he had plenty) and I got couple xtra ones being they sold them individually (only few dollars) and they come with some pre-applied sealant on them.
I drilled 3 holes 3/8" diameter and had wallow 2 of them just a bit for the jack nuts to slip in, the 3rd bottom hole is just a hole as it has a metal bar/stud on inside of door. I measured carefully and used the backing plate off an old mirror to make sure it was right. |

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
On a slightly different note, how would one go about removing factory nut inserts? I'm changing from the dumbo ears to the smaller sport mirrors.

I think you could drill straight thru it and then bend the ears back and push it back thru. Last edited by HOGDADDY; 04-12-2010 at 10:33 PM. |

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
I got mine off by drilling with 3/8" drill bit and drilling slowly as not to make the insert spin or you will have try and hold it from backside.
On a side note there also is a special tool to install them and I think it keeps it from spinning too as it is tightened down on door. There looks like there are 2 different tools you can use to install them: one is rather expensive and the other looks like it will install a few and it is cheaper I think. Re: door mirror nuts inserts
So do those expand almost like a pop-rivet when the bolt is threaded in?
Not to hi-jack this thread too much, but what can be done when there is tearing around those holes, top one specifically on the larger tri-leg mirrors? Is there enough room to get a backing plate in there?

Re: door mirror nuts inserts
Well sort of. here it is in action. The tool expands it then you just screw fastener in.

It may be hard to get a backing plate in there. I guess it could be attaced with panel adhesive cause it would be tuff to weld one there. I am not a real bodyman (but I try) btw some may know a better way. Last edited by HOGDADDY; 04-16-2010 at 09:57 PM. |
