Question on 6 to 5 lug conversion

I just swapped my 67 to 5 lug on the rear using a 71 rear end. I took the carrier and the axles out of 71 and installed them in the 67 housing. I have read on here that the axles are different lengths from a 67 to 71. Everything seemed to fit perfect. Do I need to take everything back out of the 67 housing and install it in the 71 housing?

The 71 axles are 3/4" longer then the 67 axles so this causes two problems. (1), the drum is missing the inside area of the shoes and (2), the the axle is also the inner race for the wheel bearings and since it sticks out further the rolling elements of the bearings are not in full contact with the axle. Neither situation is good so you will be better off using the 71 housing.

I could be wrong here, someone correct me if I am......I think that the '70 axle is the same length as the '71-'72 and is 6 lug. It should drop in that housing. I just put a '70 housing in my '68 because it is 3/4" longer than my '68 housing and makes up the difference in width that disc brakes add. I wanted everything to stay 6 lug and used 6 lug rotors up front.

70 rear ends could be either way as it was the change year. It is better to measure to be sure.
