tach question
OK....my tach is way off according to the computer.
I'm thinking a tach is either good or bad, but maybe there is something I don't know? Can a tach be hooked up incorrectly and still give a reading? It reads quite a bit higher RPM than I am doing. So.....if I have to replace it I've read about a Camaro tach swap. What year Camaro tach swaps without any customization? If I have to change tachs, I might as well get one that reads higher than 5,000 rpm.

Is the tach factory, new, used, etc. Is it possible you have a 6cyl tach?

It's a used tach I got from a member here and it's an 8 cylinder tach.
It's just not reading right and I'm pretty sure it's hooked up properly. It's a brand new Painless harness and those are pretty hard to mess up.

You might check your dwell. I've had my tach go a little crazy when my points were bad.

original tach might be off... I like the original look myself but you could do the camaro or an aftermarket tach...

They do tend to act funny with age. There are services that restore factory tachs. I've done this before on muscle cars. I do like the factory look, but the tachs for these trucks stop at 5,000 rpms which does me no good.
I thought about checking into the service to see if they can recalibrate the tach with a new face and higher rpms just to keep that factory look. Until then I just run aftermarket. Something to think about. |

I'd rather have a tach that reads higher RPM's as long as it looks like it belongs in the cluster.

Well I guess it depends on what everyones idea of what "looks like it belongs" is.
To me that means the factory tach. Which is why I'm sending mine out to have it refaced in original faunts for a higher reading and then recalibrated. It's expensive to do, but it will look correct when it's done. Most people probably won't even notice the rpm change on the face. Until then I just mount an aftermarket on the column, old school style |

I know there is a new 8000 rpm replacement tach available now, but forget the price. I saw it in the new truck shop catalog.. I also saw one at DC Trucks this week, and it looks nice.. I want one...

That is more than I need but 5,000 isn't enough. When you say it's "expensive" to reface/recalibrate your tach.....can you give a ballpark figure?

If your running a HEI it will read a little higher, you can send off to a decent instrument repair shop and they can make the necessary corrections. I run a Petronix distributer/coil and it sparks just fine and the Factory tach is dead on.
