replace gasket 700r4

Was wondering if anyone knew what I should torque the pan bolts to when I replace it, and what pattern to tighten them with. Also if you have done it before does a swivel work for the bolts covered by the cross member, or is there another trick? Thanks for any help!

I undid the back mount bolt and jacked up the back of the tranny with a 2x4 at the tail housing. I had to push it right to the top till it hit the floorboards but that the only way the pan will come off without pulling the cross member. And yes a swivel helps.

Re: replace gasket 700r4

When I do a tranny pan, I use a 1/4" drive ratchet and long extention with a short socket. That combination keeps me from overdoing the torque on the pan bolts. Tighten them to a snug condition in a cross pattern on the pan and then go around and snug them one last time to set the gasket crush. The 1/4" drive extention will get into many spots that the 3/8" cannot slide through. You may have to loosen the rear tranny mount bolt and lift the tranny slightly, but that is all.

Re: replace gasket 700r4

Well I got it done. Bad news is it still has a small leak near bellhousing it drips out of the little drain hole in the access panel. I think I might just take it to a shop. The pan gasket is all I feel comfortable doing on my own. Thanks for the help!

If you have a drip from the front inspection cover hole then its probably a front torque converter seal. They are not hard either, but the tranny has to come out then.
