changing manual tranny oil

I was looking at the tranny today and I am wondering how to check and change the oil. I see the bottom plug I could not see another one.

Re: changing manual tranny oil

Might only be one plug on it which would require you to suck out the old fluid with a pump and fill with new fluid up to that hole.

Re: changing manual tranny oil

If theres a plug on the bottom of it has to be one on the top cause can't fill it other wise. If theres only 1 plug will be on top. What are you working on?

Re: changing manual tranny oil

Same oil?? Mabey, mabey not. Is it a 465? (big cast iron case with a granny low gear) If it is use the same lube (80W 90) in trans and rear end(s). If not it will use ATF. Transfer cases (aluminum) use ATF. Heavy cast iron transfer cases use (80W 90) ALL differentials use 80W 90. The 465 has 2 plugs both on the left side, one high on the case and one at the bottom. Drain lube, replace pulg and fill until runs out the upper plug, about 4 quarts should do it. Jim

I have to look at it better. So I have not really taken it out on the highway yet. What do the granny trannies typically cruise at. I have a 350 in the truck

Re: changing manual tranny oil

There's no OD, so rpm would depend on your rear gears and tire size.

Re: changing manual tranny oil

Look closer, there is a fill plug on the side. IIRC it is on the passenger side, though the pic above would contradict that...

None the less, it is there.

Re: changing manual tranny oil

half gallon. Better to have to much and return one than being short in the middle of the job. It is enough of a PITA that you want to get'r done in one shot! I hate the smell of hypoid oil!!!
