The advise that's given out on the build threads are great and I'm sure appreciated. Therefore I'm starting a build thread of what is to become my daily driver & snow plow truck in the winter months. I do commercial and industrial walkways with my ATV and my brother struggles to get his snow blower around behind his Mazda3. The truck will double as a transporter for the snowblower and a plow truck for the wider sidewalks.

Donor 1:
1964 Chevrolet K10. The deal was that I remove the 327 that was in the truck and return it to the previous owner. From a Corvette he claimed, I didn't really care. Fiberglass rear fenders, not original but bonus for a winter driven truck. Braden PTO driven winch.

Donor 2:
1966 GMC ( Canadian Built so it had a Chevrolet drivetrain ) 250 Inline 6 Had a few accessories on it as well. You know me and my obsession! Rotten, my God, I think it was returning to the ore from which it was originally conceived. Then I needed a good cab so I bought.....

Donor 3:
1966 Chevrolet BBW Factory Air Cab. Looked great till I had it sand blasted. Who ever did the body work on the floor and the rockers was quite talented, it sure looked great when I went to look at it. To bad he didn't replace any of the perforated floor. I don't really like the 64-66 cabs anyways, so I sold it off with replacement panels and the cab from the 64 K10 as well. Pending the guy picking up the cabs, grounds still wet here.



Donor 4:
You have Craigslist, we have Kijiji.ca. No way as good as Craigslist, but we needed our own identity. Low and behold 1963 Chevrolet C50. 28,000 original miles. Farm truck. 292. Daily driver for the 2nd. owner, who purchased it from a factory farm. It's not at the back of the shop yet, but soon.

So the build begins. Right off the bat, Thank's....

"Slow Build" for getting the original power brake unit off the scrap truck you ran into. It will be going on this build.



"padresag" for the 4WD. 292 frame motor mounts, their cleaner than anything on the K10 right now.



"Captainfab" for supplying the first of the 17.5"x5.25" original wheels.....

All American Classics ( http://www.allamericanclassics.com/ ) supplying three of the 17.5"x5.25" original wheels which I'm converting to 17" for more tire variety.

Well you might be disappointed, cause this is going to be a stock rebuild, nothing fancy.

Now I have this shield installed under the front of the frame, and while this is obviously not a stock item, I think I've seen a stock louvered version on some truck's. Can anyone verify it's existance?



Seems that the PO bottomed out a lot on the rear snubber's. Timbrens would be nice, GMRP30 model # suggested from Timbren.

These additional holes in the frame I assume are for the 292 offset motor mounts?
Note: the front axle snubber's are the same as the rear 2WD

Took the box off and cut all the cab mount bolts the cab is ready for removal. The PO must have had the frame and differential sandblasted as there is black paint on the metal. The passenger door had a coating of fiberglass on it which peeled off in one sheet.

Step 1: Found an old fencepost on the side of the road. Cut 2 notches to fit between the 2 seams where the door weatherstrip adheres. Took a piece of 4" channel and welded to flanges with holes. Removed the bolt holding the chain on my engine hoist and bolted the channel to the end of the arm.





Step 2: Raise the cab. Didn't have to take the 4 speed shifter off. Lifted the cab in the air, then pulled the hoist out from under the frame. Moved the frame back from the cab and lowered the cab closer to the ground.



Step 3: clean the portion under the cab I couldn't reach before!

The picture you posted of the bracket that protects the rear differential vent / breather, do you think that is a factory piece?

If it's not factory, all the bends are right on the money. We'll see if anyone has this on their trucks.

Today removed the Parking Brake Cables and their clips and clevises.

Out came the Speedometer Cable that attaches to the transfer case not the transmission.

Not only did the PO bottom out the rear of the frame at the snubbers but the front as well. Must have been a hell of a last ride!

Installed the 292 passenger side offset mount after straightening out the frame.


Washed part of the frame down with OXY clean from the dollar store using a sanding foam block. Takes off the rust instantly, I need to rinse the slurry off after. Tried out POR15 on the shifter arms.


Since I can't find an original steering rod, I opted to use the 67 up dual tie rod with sleeve . Had to ream the tapers a little bit, using the XKUT reamer I purchased, in a drill press to size the pitman arm and steering arm to size.

Temporarily installed the rebuilt steering box. We have a re-builder for axle shafts, steering boxes, alternators, etc. Did it in a day so nothing special had to be found.

Installed the 1 modified 17.5" converted to 17" rim with tire, all clear so I'll do the other 3.



Moog Part#s for the Dual Tie Rods & Sleeve.



Removed the rear brakes. Had to beat the passenger side rim off the axle. Wheel cylinders are seized. The picture was taken after I removed the cobwebs. I mean really, isn't there a better place to spin a web!

Instructions on the can say to...
Sand down the rust, treat the metal, paint. It's going to take more than a quart! And more patience, next time sandblast and shoot the paint on.



SM420. The shifter is smooth and tight. Could be a bad thing, hoping it's good!



T-221. I must have washed and degrease'd this thing a 1/2 dozen times! Every once and awhile there's the faint odor of manure. Then again, I pulled it out of a pasture. What the hell did he feed those things.




A quick clean up, it has to go for a mechanical inspection.

Pulled my bicep muscle and I think a tendon so work has been limited to painting. Nothing interesting yet.

Installed a larger set of wheels to my hoist this weekend. Much easier to move things around.Replaced the bottom hydraulic cylinder bolt with a trailer hitch pin so I can rotate the cylinder for working the pump mechanism from either side of the mast. Replaced the bolt for the arm extension with a hitch pin and the bolt that holds the chain at the end of the arm with a hitch pin as well. No problem with clearance on the 4WD or the C50 Donor that's coming sooooon... Moved some stuff between my parents place and work, seems they think a 66 BBW cab is unsightly in the driveway. Like their ever awake long enough to see it. Stripped out the centers of the three remaining 17" rims and finished off a second with the 17.5" center welded in using an old brake drum lathe that they were throwing out at work. 3 day weekend here so I'll finish off the two remaining rims tomorrow.

Great build, aerotruk. One question.... How does the hoist handle on somewhat rough ground with those wheels. I was thinking of doing the same to my hoist in the hopes that it would move a bit easier on rough areas, like a barn floor.

Exactly the reason why I did the modification. I was frustrated with the hoist as the small diameter solid wheels lock into every crack. Now it floats over semi solid surfaces. Unless you have a polished concrete floor the original casters are useless. I am going install the original casters back in front of the duals but higher than original, perhaps leaving only an inch between the bottom of the square tube to the bottom of the solid caster for lowered vehicles. There is only a slip pin to remove, in order to remove the duals, to drop the section that travels beneath a lowered vehicule.

Took the hoist across the grass this morning with the cab on the arm. Met some resistance but nowhere near the solid wheels on asphalt. Sorry, but new toy, had to rave.

There, took two of the four solid steel casters I removed and mounted them recessed but flat with the top of the square tubing. There's 1" clearance between the bottom of the square tube to the ground. That gives me 4" of clearance required in order to get the hoist under a lowered car. All I have to do is remove one slip pin to install or to remove the flotation tires for regular stuff.
