Power-lok help

Going to look at a 72 parts truck and it was originally a 3/4 ton big block truck. I do not know what rear end is in it, but it has power-lok listed on the glove box. What is the easiest way to verify it is a posi, and how much work is it to pull the posi unit only? I don't want to pull the whole rear if i don't have to. Thanks for any tips, Eric

if posi why not take the whole rear?? that posi section wont fit in a 1/2 ton 12bolt rear

I realize it is not the same as a 1/2 ton 12 bolt. Without pics i am not sure if it is a dana 60 or an ho52 or what it is for sure.
It is alot easier to store the center section than to try and move a whole rear end around.

I dont know if a 3/4 ton Power Lock works the same as 1/2 ton Posi
But if it does; lift the rear off of the ground " both wheels "
By hand roll one wheel, if the other wheel rolls in the same direction, its a Posi, a 1 leg unit rolls in opposite directions.
I'm with cdowns, take the whole unit.

I agree with all above.. its a Dana 60 3:54 ratio.. (assuming its the one that came with it from the factory)..
I usually pull the fill plug on the rear cover and stick a finger in.. if finger goes in more than an inch its a non-posi... or jack it up and spin a wheel.. if the opposite side spins the same direction its a good bet it's posi..

Thanks for the help, looks to be a dana 60. Took a chance and bought the whole truck. Couldn't verify the posi part, but had enough other parts on it yet...

Joe and Tim, I was reading your comments on the 3/4t rear end. Which is more desirable the Dana or Eaton? We have both and wanted to put one of them in our 72 longhorn. Anyones else's opinion is welcome.

I believe the dana 60 is easier/less expensive to buy parts for. I think the eaton may be stronger. I am sure you will get more input on this.

Ok, i took the advice givin and bought the whole rear end..... and the rest of the truck. 1972 3/4 ton gmc sierra. Looks like the original rear is still in it. Still has one tag that reads 461
3:54
and the remnants of another tag that probably read "use posi lube only" or what ever a dana tag would read.
I pulled the drain plug and also saw these numbers inside 72 A 22934X. Not sure what those mean. Thanks for the help, Eric

Sounds like it still has the original Power-Lock.
I think that ( 72 A ) is for, Jan 1972
