292 power steering

I want to convert the 66 c-10 I have to power steering. Have the 292 L-6 motor. Are the brackets for a 250 non-integrated head gonna fit? Or do I HAVE to get brackets from a 292 motor with P/S?

Are there non-integrated and integratedheaded 292 motors? What years will work on my 1966 292 motor?

I have seen other postings on this and cant figure out if I need a 292 only bracket or if a 250 bracket will work...

Re: 292 power steering

the best situation would be locating an original, 292 power steering bracket. the 250 will not work without a healthy amount of modification. my 65 has a 292 with power steering. i was able to get the bracket, pump, steering box and hoses off a 71 c-20.

they are very hard to come by and bring a high price if they find there way to ebay. look for 67-72 3/4 and 1 ton trucks for the bracket, as alot of them, especially farm trucks, carried the 292. you might get lucky there is a thread somewhere that shows a couple of pictures of ones that have been customized from a 250 non-integrated bracket off circa 75-76 truck.

Re: 292 power steering

Here are some photos of one, but I don't remember if they were for the 292 or not. I just sold the main power steering pump bracket for the 250 to a fellow the other day. I didn't have all the components for a complete install, but the main bracket was a good start.

Re: 292 power steering

When I was looking for 250 brackets, E-bay price was always around $100-$125 for a complete set-up . Found a couple of integrated head style for $25 but passed. I searched around on-line pretty hard, the nova sites and camaro sites the HAMB etc. They would have a 250 bracket on occasion, but they would not have had the 292. I do know this-- NOBODY I found makes a reproduction bracket.
You can just get creative. it is just a pump. Mine was not that difficult to build. Check out the first part of my build , power steering is where it starts.

Re: 292 power steering

Maybe Capt Fab should start thinking about making some of these. At 400 a wack it would'nt take long to get rich. Damn, I think I could make one.

I've thought about it.....I just need to get a hold of one to see how they're positioned. I don't see charging $400 for them though

Re: 292 power steering

Usually out here stuff like this bracket are around if you look hard enough but Ive looked and wasnt able to score one up so I paid the big bucks. Its a ridiculous price but now I can mount it and look factory correct..Im just trying to justify spending over twice what it's worth! I met a guy in SF who paid $400 recently...FWIW...

Anyone know if the 3 grooved balancer is a must use? Is the 292 externally balanced? Can I simply bolt on the different balancer?

I was hopping you wouldn't charge 400. Seems to be a market.

I sure hope someone volunteers a set to the cause. I sure would like to put power steering on my C20, but I want orginal styling only and I gave up long ago trying to find reasonably priced 292 PS brackets. I bet there would be a lot of interest in them.

Re: 292 power steering

Nice pictures. Least when I get mine from Capt I'll know how to hook it up. Nice engine. I bought a bracket awhile back but I just put it on the shelf. I think I'll pull it out tomorrow and see if it's even close to somthing that will work.

Re: 292 power steering

Anyone know if the fan belt goes around the P/S pully to the fan pulley only? Or does it include the alternator and crank pully as well?

Re: 292 power steering

I just looked in my shop manual and it shows the belt going around everything. I notice you do have the right pulley on the alternator so you are set. On a side note, I want your engine, pest!!!! Here's what mine looks like right now:

Re: 292 power steering

Looking good ! I just noticed that a 292 has a short radiator hose from the water pump right back to below the water neck that a 250/230 does not have..Learned something this morning..
Bear -You need a can of engine degreaser and a pressure washer

Re: 292 power steering

My motor looked like that 6 weeks ago...

Name: Feb262010002.jpg

And that was AFTER going to the pressure washer 3X!! Pull the motor and reseal it...pressure washing makes the oil puddles bigger!
