HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

Time to ask the experts! How do you remove the handle from the SM465 tranny? I've got the removable high hump floor cover off, but don't know what to do next?
Can anyone help?

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

Get you a pair of needle nose pliers, and open them up and push down on the front and rear of the ball joint looking piece and pull up and maybe twist to the left on the shifter. Sometimes they make you curse a little bit, but once you take one out, it's pretty easy to do one again. Hope this helps, Trevor

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

As Trevor indicates, push down on the half sphere on the bottom of the shift lever and as you do, turn the whole shifter - it will pop out. You only have to turn it less than a 1/4 turn. Make sure you have the transmission in neutral before you do it.

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

I used a wooden dowel to push/twist/pop mine out. Then you can look inside and see why those transmissions are so bomb proof.

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

I followed your directions but still can't seem to free up my shift lever. It looks like there might be a roll pin in mine. Do I need to pull the pin out?

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

I menuvered my CH465 down and out without removing my shifter. You might have to lift the truck a bit. Just make sure it's blocked up with good jack stands.

Re: HELP! SM465 shifter lever removal

It's been a while since I've looked at mine, but if your shifter has a lot of slop, you'll want to check where the shifter pawl is fitted into the end of the shifter. If you remove the roll pin and pull the pawl out of the end of the shifter, there should be a pair of o-rings. If those are missing (like mine were) you'll have a lot of slop. I replaced mine with the largest diameter o-ring stock I could compress into there. It tightened my shifter up considerably. Of course, shifter slop is all relative. This transmission will never have a tight pattern

I got mine out! I pushed down on it with a cresent wrench lying on top of where the lever connects into the trans. By the way I' am new to the forum.

Papaloo is exactly right.

Some of the newer versions also have a rectangular sleeve that fits up in there to provide isolation instead of o rings, but the same concept.

If you don't mind a little shifter "buzz" at times, you can weld it up solid. Won't hurt anything and it will be as tight as can be!
