Unhappy Need your help

I have a 1971 GMC 4x4 shortbed. When I got the truck 6 months ago it had a problem with the front end. When I apply the brakes from 50 to 60 mph it seems that the front end moves from right to left violently. I can't seem to figure out what it is. When I got to truck it already have a 4 inch Rancho suspension lift, springs in front and blocks in the rear. I have changed the following, front leaf spring bushings, u-joints, steering stabalizer, front and rear shocks and all new grade 8 hardware. I've replaced the rear brakes to include drums, brakes and all hardware. I've checked the wheel bearings and they are fine, I jacked up the truck and don't have any droop or anything loose. What could it be? Any suggestions will help, this is driving me crazy. Thanks

Re: Need your help

If it happens during braking, it is probably ball-joint and/or tie rod related. Does it have wedge-shaped shims between the springs and the axle?

Lower-speed wobble/jerk is usually related to a stiff axle-joint....and this could still be the case here, but less likely.

Re: Need your help

WHith your front wheels up, grab the top and the bottom of your tire and try to rock it, twist back and forth as strong as you can. If you have any movement in this direction your ball joints are shot, we are talking about a D44 front right?

Re: Need your help

i had the same thing happen with mine. even after new ball joints. check the rivots that hold the spring perches in the front. while sitting with the engine running have a buddy turn the steering wheel back and forth while watching the shackle mine moved so far it was scary. I just drilled them out and put close thread grade 8 bolts in their place. just something to check. i'll send a pic if i ever figure how to!

I do have a dann 44 and I did check the ball joints this morning and it seems that the driveside is shot. I also did notice that a couple of rivets on the spring perch is loose. Thanks for all of you guys help. How hard is it to change the ball joints and tie rod ends, I'm trying to do this build on the cheap? Thanks again

Re: Need your help

You'll need a press to get the ball joints out. I took my knuckels apart and had a local shop press out the old and press in the new, then put it all back togeather.
