rusty gas tank liner or cleaner

I have a question that isnt truck related but may be of some use to someone with the same issue on truck. I have a 46 minneapolis moline tractor and the tank had lots of condensation get in it and rusted the inside pretty good. I put stones in it and rolled it around and vaccumed it all out but I am still getting rust in my fuel line and filter and plugging it up. My question is what have you guys used to line tanks to seal em up and or cover over crud on the inside? If it was a vehicle I would opt for a new tank but that really isnt an option here for me. I know people have used this kind of stuff on vehicle tanks but I never have and only want to do it once. Let me hear your ideas or recommendations. I have been fighting this problem for over a year.Thanks.

Buy a gallon of muriatic acid (swimming pool acid) at Walmart, Home Depot, etc...

Seal all tank outlets but one. I use duct tape. Pour in a quart or so of acid and fill the rest up mostly full with water. Cover last opening. Turn and shake the tank in all directions. Be damn careful, that acid is the real deal. Drain tank and check. You might need to do it several times but you will wind up with a dead clean tank.

Once tank is shiny metal inside, flush very thoroughly with water. I run the garden hose in it for an hour or more.

Drain and dry tank by running air through it with either a fan or air hose.

Seal with POR15 tank sealer. Do not use Redkote or Kreem. Both of those products have proven to be poor long term solutions.

I have fixed a lot of tanks this way and it flat works. I do a good bit of motorcycle work and many of the tanks are simply irreplaceable so it's either fix them or nothing.

Re: rusty gas tank liner or cleaner

after using water to flush it - you can dry the tank with M.E.K. - it absorbs water and flashes dry quickly so there are no worries about missing any. 1 quart will absorb about 3 ounces of water. its about $10 and you should be able to get it at your local HW store - like mentioned above take it easy with this **** though; get a vapor mask probably

drying the tank with compressed air can add water if there is condensation in the air tank

Re: rusty gas tank liner or cleaner

Go to Orilley's and buy this to coat the tank.

We use it on our vintage snowmobile tanks with very good results
(even covered a larger than pinhole leak for me)

X2. Many an old Harley and Indian tank have been saved with this method.

Re: rusty gas tank liner or cleaner

When I sealed the tank on my old Honda bike I used a piece of chain to knock the loose stuff out. Then sealed it with some blue tank sealer. That was probably 6-7 years ago now. I don't remember what it was called.
