Headliner
I need to replace the headliner on my 83. It has the factory padded headliner but the fabric is gone and the foam padding is pitted/crumbling. What is the cheapest/best replacement?

Re: Headliner
try captkaos our site vendor otherwise you can try to find a good foam in the boneyard and get material at a fabric place and attach it with spray adhesieve

Re: Headliner
I bought some material on Ebay. Search "headliner material" and it's from a really nice guy from Chico, CA. The material cost me 2.99 plus 6.00 shipping. I scraped the headliner with a wire brush to get it clean, then I glued it to my very weathered foam molding with scotch super high strength spray glue. It came out pretty good. The material I bought was some kind of blowout. Most of his stuff is around $15 and up.

Re: Headliner
I just dropped my headliner off at the local upholstery shop that rebuilt my seat. $55 for OEM like headliner. It turns out that my headliner is on a soft fiberglass base (like dense insulation) - made it easy to remove (did not have to remove the seat belt bolts (impossible to turn out). However, there is a residue of the old liner stuck to the fiberglass which the upholsterer said had to stay on the fiberglass, because the new liner material would not stick to the fiberglass well. So, I figured I would leave this in the hands of a professional.
The only kits I saw were like $40 - $55 with shipping. Too bad I did not see the cheapo Ebay post below first. |

Re: Headliner
I guess the big difference on these later model square bodies is that the OEM headliner is soft fiberglass and the replacements Captkaos has are on a hard ABS backing. Sounds like the ABS backing is better, but in my case, recovering the OEM fiberglass was better because I could not get out the seat belt bolts in the cab to remove the plastic trim in the corners. The soft fiberglass will bend enough to get over the plastic corner trim without removing it. I wanted perforated vinyl like my old 73 had but the upholsterer said it would not stick to the fiberglass.

Re: Headliner
Honestly i would strip the adhesive left and paint it to match the interior. metal roofs are great.

Re: Headliner
I wish the entire interior was metal like the old trucks - dash, door panels, headliner. But in AZ desert I do appreciate the insulation effect of the headliner fiberglass backing.
