Stepside to Fleetside
Hello everyone. My name is Rod and I am a long time reader but this is my first post. I've never been one to ask for help or advise but as I've grown older I start to realize that grip it and rip it, and the school of hard knocks are not always the way to go. Dad was right. Again.
I'm looking at purchasing a 1966 stepside. The truck has 5 lug conversion, power discs on the front, big back window, painless wiring harness with 305 TBI 350 Auto. Allot of work has already been done but I am not crazy about the stepside. Are the frames the same for stepside and fleetside? Can I swap a fleetside bed on the truck? Any input is appreciated. I appreciate the amount of knowledge that is available on this board. |

Re: Stepside to Fleetside
Welcome Rod! Yes, the frames are the same.
"Dad was right, again" However, sometimes it is a good thing to learn the hard way.

Re: Stepside to Fleetside
If you get serious about buying the truck with the intent of changing the bed, make sure to research availability and expense of a usable fleetside bed. The cheapest solution may require purchasing another truck to get one that isn't rusted out or suffered major damage from 40+ years of hard use. Just something to consider in determining the overall cost the the truck in the configuration you prefer. Unless the stepside is a real bargain, or you think it might grow on you, it could end up being less expensive buying a fleetside truck you really want in the first place.

Re: Stepside to Fleetside
also only the 63-66 fleet bed is a direct bolt on, a 60-62 will require a little fab work because the X frame was wider through the back.

Re: Stepside to Fleetside
Thanks for the reply's. I haven't completely decided if I will buy this truck. It has allot of the things already completed that are beyond my abilities. I have been looking at several fleet sides and eventually one will present itself and I will buy it. I am looking for 64, 65, 66 short bed fleet side.

Welcome to the forum and hope you find the truck you are looking for.
By your statement of: It has allot of the things already completed that are beyond my abilities. It sounds like you have heeded some of your dad's instruction and wisdom. |
