Re: steering box?

well, there are a few issues...

1. your frame needs a bracket to hold the new box (contact Captainfab)
2. you can use any 4WD box from 72-87 (PS lines went metric somethime in the early 80's though)
3. You need pump, brackets and pulley's for your engine (SBC is easy, inline isn't)
4. are you running the original axle? If so then it's not too easy to connect the new box to your old axle (you would have to fab a new drag link). A lot of guys (like me) just pull a new disc brake axle from a newer truck too. Then you open up another can of worms with master cylinders and prop valves for braking, plus power brakes.

Re: steering box?

There are two different style boxes as well as two different style hydraulic fittings. The pump/hoses must match the box fittings. (o-ring or flare) The two box styles are fixed or variable ratio. The variable is the newer style and gives a better on-center feel for the road. You should be able to get a pump/box set off of any 69-72 truck to get the mounting brackets that will work with any older setup, and if you have heads with accessory bolt holes, you have many more options depending on your accessory drive setup. Blazers and Subs through 91 have the same solid axle/box setup.

Unless you find yourself with a leaking front axle and are thinking about rebuilding, then just go all the way with the power disc brakes & power steering setup.
