Has anyone replaced their tail gate straps?

The stock tailgate straps are just those 2 pieces of steel that fold up on each side, and they can be a little noisy at times. So has anyone replaced these with cables like some newer trucks? If so got some pics?

I've been thinking about measuring and seeing if there's some in the help! section of the autoparts stores the right length and trying them, but attaching them to the tailgate and bed will be the problem.

Go search the 67-72 project forum. There was a guy there (don't remember his SN) that installed Furd Ranger cables, IIRC. It was pretty simple and looked great!

Re: Has anyone replaced their tail gate straps?

Found it. Member's screen name is pat. You can probably send him a PM and ask how he did it. It seems to me there was another one that did this, but it was bronze, or dark orange, something like that. Can't find that one though.

His truck is pretty much what my 68 would have looked like if I had kept it! Here are a couple of pics.

Re: Has anyone replaced their tail gate straps?

Steal some off a newer truck and try it out. GM had a recall on newer Silverado trucks that have cable tailgate straps. Failure was caused by corrosion from salty conditions (snow & the coast) so some companies now offer stainless steel straps. Why not go the other way. Straps to cables!

Re: Has anyone replaced their tail gate straps?

Those cables look almost identical to the cables on the 99-up GM trucks, too. Probably the same cable, but with a GM part # instead.
