Newbie in need of some help engine help

Hi everyone, I am new to the board and recently purchased a 67 C10. Previous owner said he thought it jumped time. It is a 283 with a 1406 Edelbrock Carb, it is HEI not points. I have adjusted the timing and it starts, but anytime I attempt to give it gas due to idling rough, it shoots out of the carb. Cap and Distributor, rotor, spark plugs, and wires were all replaced this week. I did notice the ignition wire was screwed up, because I ran a lead line from the switch on the distributor to the battery and she turned right over. Any other suggestions on getting this old beauty running smooth?

Try a new coil....these going bad often results in backfires and horrible running. Virtually impossible to jump time.

easiest way to tell is by use of a piston stop to determing TDC then see if the pointer and balancer line up

i've seen plenty of 40year old motors with very worn timing chains and gears jump time

come on guys this is an easy one............

the original wire has a resistor in it and doesn't supply the 12V needed for the HEI..run a new wire from the fuse box to the HEI I'll will to bet it cures you issue

Re: Newbie in need of some help engine help

Agreed...potentially a good catch but this should have been done when the HEI was installed and if not done it should never have run properly since. My guess is that it did run fine after the HEI install. Ask the PO if it ran fine after the HEI install. If it did, then I would check the coil. Probably has an ancient coil. But as suggested, check TDC before replacing the coil. A jump in timing is the last thing you want to remedy on an original motor!

Re: Newbie in need of some help engine help

PO said it ran for about a week, sluggish but it ran. Gonna check the coil and wiring. He was messing with the blower motor too and I am wondering if he might have blown a fuse so I have to check that also. He had this thing tore apart and not sure what he did to what so gotta retrace his steps and check everything. I will keep you guys posted. Got title transferred and historical plates ordered today so I am ready to run this puppy! Thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it.

Re: Newbie in need of some help engine help

Well, it turns out it was the 12V running to the ignition. She runs like a champ, I threw some tranny fluid in it and ran her up and down the alley a few times with no issues. Brakes need bled and want to hook a tach to it tomorrow to get adjustments down, but she's running, first battle won!
