Has anyone ever made one of these a convertable???
I was drifting back to my younger days in the late 80's to early 90's. I remember a crazy where guys were taking the little import trucks and making the tops removable. They could actually set the top in the bed. The lines of the top made it somewhat do-able. I was wondering if people attempt or succeed with these trucks. It looks like the top part where the window and top meet would be almost impossible to do right but I have seen some incredible things on this website. I'd LOVE to find a 2wd blazer to do the same thing I did to my truck. Blowing the top off a pickup and doing something with the back part of the cab could be interesting if done right.
Any pics?? |

never thought about "converting" mine, but there was a company that made a conversion kit. i have seen a few conversions at shows (back in the early ninties), and i have an old issue of sport truck that has an article on converting a 67-72. the conversion kit came with a fiberglass top as part of the package. not my preference though.

I don't think it would be mine either. Some things are just better left alone. I was just wondering if it had been done and what it looked like!

The only GOOD reason to do that would be so your mullet would flap in the wind and everyone could check out your Randy "Macho Man" Savage sunglasses. Wanna go topless? Get a Blazer!

Re: Has anyone ever made one of these a convertable???
i acquired that was pre cut off and unfinished. ended up finishing the back lower area under window and the top of windshield and it didnt look bad. i ended up making it a removeable hardtop type truck. took it out on the road and the noise and wind buffeting was just nasty as hell. ended up trading it for a 67 shortbed chevy big back window 4x4. v8 4 speed. wish i kept the 67..lol

Re: Has anyone ever made one of these a convertable???
Back in the day I did several of those on mini-trucks from kits. They were mostly Toyotas and S-10s, with a Dodge D-50 and an Isuzu P'up or 2, never a full-sized truck of any kind. I don't even remember if the kits were available for big trucks? The top would have been very heavy, because the ones I did were really just "caps" for the sheet metal after you cut the top off. They were removable hard-tops, not true cloth folding style tops.

I have seen a fiberglass pickup style cab shell for a blazer, but not what you're talking about

You could probally find a half cab from a blazer and be decently close cut the doors down just like a k5 use the windshield frame from a k5 then the hardest part would be the rear but by the time your done a k5 may of been your best bet

I have seen a couple of long bed trucks that had the cab cut so you could remove them. Did not look too bad and the guys that owned them really like them and got quite a bit of attention with them.

Re: Has anyone ever made one of these a convertable???
There is a 71-72 shortbed here locally that has a cut off top. Also had a later model stepside bed on it. The door frames were cut off, & windows removed too, & the glass channels were capped over, so it was basically, a "roadster" hack job, though the work looked reasonably well done. Had the seat upholstery rolled over the back of the cab hiding the metal edge.
I saw it a couple years ago, sitting at a local stereo shop & disliked it so much I that forgot to take a photo of it. I later saw it sitting in an old shed, and it had a major layer of dust all over it, looking like it hadn't been driven in a long while. I'll check next time I pass by & see if it's still there for a photo. |
