'83- cant switch fuel tanks

I cant switch from the left tank to he right tank in my 83. What is the typical fix needed? I didn't want to just go buy the switch if the problem was with something else. Thanks, Nik

Try rapping on the switch solenoid. Should be on the passenger side with fuel lines attached.

well, i tried rapping on the solenoid with no luck. hit it with the handle of a pretty heavy screwdriver. Maybe it'll take a little more of a blow. Maybe a new solenoid?

Test for power first at the switch valve. Try switching while someone listens to the valve. Sometimes they do get stuck. I had to replace mine.

Well, I'll have to check for power and see if I can hear it working tomorrow when i'll have someone to help me. Too bad you can't switch out to a manual valve!

I've always wondered about a braided crossover line.

Re: '83- cant switch fuel tanks

Did you ever figure out what the problem was? I have an '85 that won't switch tanks either, have only owned it a few weeks now and have just been using the left side but it would be nice to be able to switch and use both tanks since there are both there. The guy I bought it from thought it was the switch which would be an easy fix and cheaper than a new valve solenoid.

Mine stopped working on one side also. It turned out the rubber fuel line had some hairline cracks in it back where it bends aroung the the tank. Put new line in and all was well.

Mine quit on me a while back and I replaced the rocker switch in the cab and now she works like new again.
