US Forest Service Truck Build Thread

Hey guys, long time looker first time poster...but here is a truck I just got done working on; it's a 1963 Chevy that I turned into a US Forest Service Tribute. It will have a lot of old skool pinstriping as soon as the weather cooperates and I can get out there and do it; I will update when finished.

To look at some of the pinstriping I have worked on feel free to check out;

Thanks for looking.

I was gonna ask what the red paint was for, but then it became obvious. Nice work...

Cool concept

How about a spot light and a gun rack? Kind of goes with the theme.

Can you elaborate on how you did the logo?

Muy bien. Did you use the broom to add texture to the paint or for actual sweeping purposes? i really like the logo. how did you make it so weathered?

I have a sweet spot light but I can't figure out how to mount it because my pillars are so small...anyway, about the logo, I drew out the shield of the logo on some cardboard and traced it to both doors, masked it out and then painted them Ivory white. After that I fine lined around the shield and painted the negative space Olive Drab. Once that was done I drew the inside of the logo out on some friskit film and placed it on top of the shield. This is the hardest step as once the film is placed on the shield there is about two hours of X-ACTO knife cutting involved on each door to cut out all the little letters. After it was sprayed I just did some distressing to get the look I wanted.
In case anyone is interested in getting some door art done I can design it for you and draw everything out on some friskit film and mail it to you as a kit that you can do yourself with a little instruction from me! I have done this before with success. I have some pics of logo's I have done on my hub garage page...it's under andys pinstriping.

Re: US Forest Service Truck Build Thread

Thank you for the compliments buddy! I used the broom to get some slight texture while the paint was still tacky. To weather the logo I wet sanded it with 320 and 600 grit and I rubbed it with a red scotch brite pad.

Re: US Forest Service Truck Build Thread

Since everyone has been so helpful already and has supplied me with instructions to install my spot light and helping me locate some used fender emblems, I was wondering if anyone out there has any idea how I can get this thing REALLY low...on the cheap? My wife and I are having a baby in a month so I'm not allowed to go out and buy an airbag set up but I would love to get this as low as I can...I have done lot's of fabrication work and I have contemplated z'ing and c notching my frame since I can do that basically for free but I am wondering if there is an easier way?

Good looking truck.

Hey, I'm not trying to give you a hard time or anything, but don't you have to have an agency's permission to use their logo/sheild? I'm only asking 'cause it could bring some unwanted trouble from John Law. Unless of course this was built for the Forest Service, or you work for them, then that may be a different story.

Man I wish I knew how to paint. I work for the Nat'l Park Service, and I really like the idea of what you did.

Re: US Forest Service Truck Build Thread

I am hoping that it's not a big deal to them...I got pulled over two weeks ago by a Forest Ranger and he just wanted to check the truck out. I asked him about the legality of what I did and he said that since the truck is so old and they don't really use anything like that anymore I should be alright...probably better not wear my old boy scout uniform when I'm in it though!

Re: US Forest Service Truck Build Thread

Tough without some dough to throw at it.....it would be a ton of work, but if you can fabricate and can tear stuff apart you could step your control arms, pancake your front crossmember. I think spindles and disc's would be easier; but you know how it goes.

The rear, if coil, could use some lowering blocks on the trailing arm. You could home-make those but pop for some new u-bolts....may need an adjustable panhard depending on how low it gets.

A few thoughts anyway.......cool paint by the way, too!!

Now that's funny right there. I was kind of thinking that way with the markings, but was mostly curious what you knew about it. Very well done so far.

Good job, looks great man !!!

I always wanted to do some door art on one of my trucks with my shop name....

As Protrash mentioned, spindles would be the easiest.
