Any way to get rid of the sputtering/ticking sound with Magnaflows?

Hey guys,

I have been fighting my exhaust system for a while now. Had bad drone with my flowmasters, so I ditched them added a crossover pipe (H pipe) and 2 new magnaflow 11236 mufflers.

They sound pretty good but they have that sputtering/ticking sound at light throttle. They kinda sound like old school glass packs (Which they kind of are) but I hate that ticking sputter at low rpm. I sounds like you have an exhaust leak even though you don't.

Here is a video, it didn't pickup the sound I am talking about very well, but you can get an idea. I like the low tones but hate the sputter. Anyone dealt with this, or have any ideas. All the newer fuel injected trucks that have these same mufflers don't seem to have the same sputter.

I have magnaflows on my 70 & they do the same thing. The flowmaster 40s i had before sounded alot better before one of the baffles came loose and started rattling. I think the magnaflows were designed for catalytic converter equipped trucks.

Put your flows back on. That will fix it

Yeah I know what you mean about the drone noise from the flowmasters. As thats what I have on my '72. Don't get me wrong it sounds great! But the so called "drone" noise is hard to take and cruising speeds.

I wasn't able to listen to your sound clip (slow connection here), but I have never noticed any type of sputtering/ticking sound at light throttle with my Magnaflows (no crossover... turndowns dump ahead of axle). Could it possibly be a result of something particular to your carburetion?

Man, I don't miss those Flows one bit. The way my exhaust is setup (Mufflers under the cab, exits before the rear axle) those things would give you a major headache after 5 minutes of freeway driving.

Re: Any way to get rid of the sputtering/ticking sound with Magnaflows?

Mine is just a cruiser and not a daily driver. But almost every truck I have ever had had flows turned down before the rear Axel. The shortest one of that bunch though was an extended cab so maybe that's the difference

The magnaflows sound great. I have flowmasters, and they sound tinny at idle. I hate them.

I think that's just the way Magnaflows are, mine do it too.

You hit the nail on the head. The catalytic converters act as a resonator in the newer trucks, getting rid of the rasp/ticking sound. I love the way magnaflows sound on my 01, and will be going with them on my 67, except with a small resonator in line with the magnaflow. Newer trucks sound just the same when run through magnaflows with the kitties missing. If you notice, alot of the magnaflow kits include resonators or longer mufflers for this reason.

Ah, I always forget about the kitties, yeah that makes perfect sense. Thanks guys, I kind of like it sometimes, then other times I find myself re-torquing the header and collector bolts thinking there is a leak somewhere

Re: Any way to get rid of the sputtering/ticking sound with Magnaflows?

I have the same issue with mine and I spent weeks looking for a leak only to never find one. What did you guys find was the best way to get the sound go away? I'm running the X Pipe and don't really want to cut that up...

Sounds like there is no options, unless you want to put in a resonator.

Re: Any way to get rid of the sputtering/ticking sound with Magnaflows?

I put some header wrap on my X pipe this weekend and it made a big difference. I would say 85 percent of the unwanted sputtering/ticking sound is gone. I wrapped the X section twice and went about 10 inches before the x and about 6 inches after on the pipes. What I was unsure of is where the majority of the noise comes from, IE, before or after the X. I plan to buy another roll and double up on what I have and hopefully the noise will be gone.

Here is what I used:

Also, You can find this on ebay for $45 shipped.

Try the flowmasters with H-pipe, that's the setup I have. I just took a long trip in my truck with no drone at all. Mine dump right before the bumper.

This is exactly what I had in my truck and I agree.

This fix is for people who already spent the $500 on the magmaflow setup and like the sound, except for the above issue that the wrap fixes...

That's great....I am just stating that I do not have a problem with my Flowmaster set-up. This might help someone else who reads this thread and has not changed over yet.

I don't have a crossover and it makes the same sound as they're describing. I like it with the windows down, but with em up I always suspect an exhaust leak at first. Check everything and it's fine. Mine are 4x14 bullets

I noticed my 02 chevy truck makes a rattling noise when i drive off. Must be a baffles that came loose. And i have flowmasters 40s in my truck. Which are 8 years old

Re: Any way to get rid of the sputtering/ticking sound with Magnaflows?

I wrote it off to the fact i only put 2000-3000 miles on the truck a year & wasnt burning the water out of the exhaust. They were a little older maybe 9 years & rusted real bad on the inside, but looked fine the outside.
